Summary
Should be clearly and concisely stated. It goes first but should be written last. It should state the purpose for writing, the methods used, the key design decisions, and the most important conclusions (recommendations). The summary is a miniature version of the report.
Introduction
Should set the seen and give background information for a reader not familiar with the situation. Rephrase the rules so that we are sure that you understand them.
Background
Explain the scientific principles behind your design.
This section should give a rich, precise and clear explanation of the math and science principles involved.
Here and throughout your report, define all technical terms. Provide informal definitions (synonyms) for terms that may be unfamiliar to the audience. Provide formal definitions (including term, class and differentiating characteristics) for unfamiliar terms that are essential to the design. Use expanded definitions (background or history, list of parts, application, or visual aid) for supporting information.
Safety
Describe any special safety procedures that were needed. State that "A list of general safety rules is provided in appendix A."
Design
Explain the reasons behind your design. Why did you design your entry the way you did?
Include drawings and design calculations.
Drawings should have borders, and titles. Drawings should be numbered “figure 1”, “figure 2”, etc. Follow standards for the number and type of views shown, labeling and dimensioning. Clearly state the results of your calculations and show that they were performed correctly.
Clearly describe the design process employed, alternatives explored, and decisions reached. Write clear concise paragraphs, with a topic sentence and the main idea easy to grasp. Explain the subdivision of each topic, followed by details.
Check the specific directions provided in the individual challenge instructions for further requirements.
Development
Explain how you tested your design, and the improvements this led you to make.
Describe the problems that you encountered in designing and building your product. How did you solve these problems?
Resources
[Use this paragraph, just update the total cost]. A list of team members and their contributions is provided in appendix B. Appendix C provides our initial schedule and a description of what we accomplished each day. A list of materials used in this challenge, including an estimate of the cost of donated materials is provided in appendix D, the total cost was $1.23. Appendix E lists and describes special tools and machines used in this challenge. Working drawings are included in appendix F.
Conclusions
How successful is your project? What did you learn by taking part? What did you learn about your aptitude for technology related careers?
Conclusions should be valid and acceptable, specific, and accurate. They should explain clearly, accurately, and thoroughly why the evidence presented supports the conclusions.
Acknowledgements
List the names of the adults who assisted you in the project with a brief description of what they did. Include a certification, signed by all student team members and adults assisting, stating that: “We hereby certify that the majority of the ideas, design and work was originated and performed by the students, with limited assistance by adults, as described above.”
Bibliography
List all references used, including internet, books, and magazines. Use MLA or another recognizable format.
1
Appendix A — Safety
List the general safety procedures that were followed to make sure that no one got hurt. (Any special safety procedures that were needed should be described in the body of the report.)
A – 1
Appendix B — Team Members
List the team members, with a short description of how each person helped to make the project a success. What special skills were learned or demonstrated?
B – 1
Appendix C — Scheduling and Accomplishment
Show on a time line, or similar method, how you scheduled your project. Include brief records of meetings telling how you managed the schedule.
C – 1
Appendix D — Material Resources
Provide a record of all materials used and how much they cost. Include an estimate of the value of donated materials. Give the total cost. Credit will be given for economical use of resources.
