National Neighbourhood and Home Watch Awards

To celebrate and reward the outstanding work carried out by Neighbourhood and Home Watch (NHW) volunteers across England and Wales, members are invited to take part in the inaugural National Neighbourhood and Home Watch Awards, due to take place on 18th June 2013, as part of our annual NHW Week celebrations.

The awards ceremony will be hosted by the Minister for Crime and Prevention and Anti-Social Behaviour, Rt. Hon. Jeremy Browne MP, at the House of Commons, between 4pm and 6pm.

Members, coordinators and partners are encouraged to nominate both schemes and members for up to a maximum of two awards per nominee, from a list of ten categories, ranging from outstanding service, innovation, partnership working to community advocacy, to name but a few. Self-nominations will also be accepted.

For a full list of award categories and criteria, please refer to the below table.

A short list for each of the ten award categories will be selected by each Region, with overall national winners and runners up selected by the Neighbourhood and Home Watch Network (NHWN) Board of Trustees.

National finalists (winners and runners up) will be invited to attend the event in London, with an additional guest of their choice (travel expenses will be reimbursed in line with the NHWN expenses policy). The winner for each category will be announced during the awards ceremony.

Partnership Working Award /
  • A scheme or coordinator that has developed a particularly effective partnership/s which can be evidenced to have made a significant positive impact within their community.

Outstanding Achievement Award (scheme)

  • A scheme that can demonstrate and/or show evidence of the positive difference they have made within their community.

Outstanding Achievement Award (coordinator) /
  • A coordinator who has made a significant difference to their scheme and /or community.
  • A coordinator who has gone above and beyond their volunteer role.
  • Long service to NHW.

Community Engagement Award /
  • A schemeor coordinator working/ engaging with hard to reach groups (black and ethnic minorities, young people, vulnerable people, high crime areas, people with disabilities etc.).
  • A scheme or coordinator from within hard to reach groups that have made a significant difference within their community.
  • A project promoting integration and/or community engagement.

National Database Award (Neighbourhood Alert)

  • A scheme or coordinator that have made an outstanding contribution to updating and/or managing the national database and/or Neighbourhood Alert within their local area.
  • A scheme or coordinator that has championed the use of the national database, national communication system (Neighbourhood Alert) and the supporting tools on the Our Watch website, to the most effect.

Innovation Award

  • A scheme or coordinator that has developed an innovative project to reduce crime in their community.
  • A project that has gone beyond the remit of traditional NHW duties which can be evidenced to have had a positive impact on their community.

Environmental Improvement Award /
  • A scheme or coordinator that has participated in environmental improvements (defensive planting, improved street lighting, allotment project, CCTV etc.) that may also have helped reduce crime.

Community AdvocacyAward

  • A scheme or coordinator who has displayed exceptional activism within their community.

Inspiring Youth Award /
  • A scheme or coordinator working with young people.
  • Outstanding Junior NHW groups.
  • A scheme or coordinator working with students.
  • A young coordinator making a difference to their community (under 21 years old).

Safer Neighbourhoods Award /
  • A scheme or coordinator that has helped their communities to keep safe using target hardening devices, such as locks and burglar alarms etc.
  • A scheme or coordinator engaged in an effective neighbour to neighbour project.
  • A scheme or coordinator involved in campaigning against Doorstep Selling.
  • A scheme or coordinator that has successfully used property marking to help reduce crime and /or catch criminals.

*A maximum of two award categories may be selected per nominee/scheme
