Program Summary:

N.J.A.C. 6A:14 and the School-Based SLP: Revisiting, Negotiating and Clarifying the Special Education Code

In order for students found eligible for special education to receive a free appropriate public education (FAPE), as required by federal and state mandates, SLSs must be informed about the regulations and know how to interpret them appropriately. Only then can IEPs be implemented effectively thus enabling students with disabilities to succeed and achieve the goals of the Common Core State Standards(CCSS). Familiarity with these regulations, although daunting, is an essential requirement for SLSs to work effectively in the schools. Topics of interest include regulations for diagnosing and eligibility, location of services, writing goals aligned with the CCSS, revocation of consent and re-evaluation procedures. The 2010 ASHA document, Roles and Responsibilities of SLPs in Schools, will be the framework for the issues.
