MCH Oral Health Subcommittee Meeting Notes

December 16, 2015 meeting minutes

Present:Robin, Julie, Heather, Pari, Linda

Absent:Devan, Christina, Chuck, Ashley, Dani, Leslie, Denise, and Sally

·  The 2015 dental practice survey is due to be completed by 12/31. Preliminary results indicate a very large percentage of dentists listed on the portal as accepting MC patients that are not really accepting new patients, and many dental practices that do not accept children until age 3 or 4; however, in counties where there is a PHDH, there are many more dental practices accepting children at age one (so far/results are preliminary). We will work with Health Surveillance to create a map that illustrates where the gaps in access are and use this information to target our efforts (e.g., age one training and information about the safety and importance of oral health during pregnancy). The map will be shared with you when it is complete (hopefully by the end of January).

·  The Health Department’s Office of Oral Health and MCH programs are collaborating to update the consensus statement regarding the safety and importance of oral health during pregnancy. We are going to work with a marketing firm to update the consensus statement, and we are going to look to coalition members for help distributing the statement to medical and dental care providers at the local level and through your networks. We developed a third SMART objective related to this task: By8/31/16the consensus statement will be updated and distributed (in person) to at least one Ob/Gyn office in each of Vermont’s 13 counties.

·  The Health Department’s office of oral health is printing the Medicaid pregnancy brochure for public health dental hygienists to use in WIC. This brochure is available for printing as a PDF (attached).

·  The CHAMP network of medical practices (40 plus practices throughout VT that see children) is going to start tracking fluoride varnish application in the medical home. More information about CHAMP network:https://www.uvm.edu/medicine/vchip/?Page=CHAMP.html

Progress towards achievement of SMART objectives:

By8/31/1612 district offices will have hosted theProviding Preventive Dental Care Services to Children Beginning at Age Onetraining:Progress: one District office (Newport) has hosted the training (with great success!), two others (St. Albans and Burlington) are scheduled for April and May. Morrisville will host their training in February, date not set yet. Coalition members can support this objective by promoting trainings. Members will be notified as logistics are confirmed.

By8/31/16at least one dental practice not currently accepting children beginning at age one who are insured by Medicaid (as evidenced by the 2015 dental practice survey) will begin doing so in areas that have an Early Head Start program and areas determined to be of high need according to the district office survey:Progress: N/A, waiting for survey completion- estimated completion is January.

By8/31/16the consensus statement will be updated and distributed (in person) to at least one Ob/Gyn office in each of Vermont’s 13 counties.Progress: A “scope of work” document has been written, waiting for approval from business office to begin working with marketing firm to update consensus statement

Nest Steps:

·  All: Fill out Doodle poll for January meeting and mid-year meeting (sent by Fonda Ripley)

·  Robin: Explore potential to develop a spreadsheet that shows the Ob providers that see the largest number of women who are insured by Medicaid in each county. We can use this spreadsheet to target our in-person outreach efforts to Ob offices throughout VT.

·  Robin: Draft a one page FAQ or script that can be used by people doing the targeted outreach with Ob providers, send to coalition members for edits.

·  Pari and Linda: send RobinAge One Trainingflyers as they are completed so that coalition members can help promote the training to dental team members in their areas/through their networks.
