[School]

FROM: [District Assessment Coordinator]

[Title]

DATE: [Date]

SUBJECT: National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)

2017 Administration

Your school has received the distinction of being selected to represent schools across Florida and the nation by participating in the 2017 administration of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students in the United States know and can do in various subjects. It is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), within the U.S. Department of Education.

NAEP School Folder

Inside the accompanying NAEP school folder is an information sheet which lists the types of assessments that will be administered, the scheduled assessment date, the estimated number of students that will participate, and your school’s MyNAEP Registration ID number. To prepare for the assessment, please complete the following:

ü  Place the NAEP assessment date on your school calendar.

ü  Appoint a School NAEP Coordinator to serve as the liaison for all NAEP activities in your school. Give the enclosed NAEP folder to your designated school coordinator. The school coordinator should

o  know how to collect student information, such as birth dates, demographic information, and if any students have withdrawn;

o  be comfortable using a computer, since all assessment preparation activities will be completed online; and

o  be familiar with how students participate in statewide assessments.

ü  Have the School NAEP Coordinator register on the MyNAEP website using the MyNAEP Registration ID number and complete the online Provide School Information (PSI) form no later than Friday, October 14. Instructions are included in the NAEP school folder.

Your School’s NAEP Participation

Outlined below is a broad overview of the NAEP assessments that will be administered at your school.

·  Subjects: Civics, Geography, Mathematics, Reading, U.S. History, and Writing

·  Grade: 4 or 8

·  Digitally based (tablet) sessions: Two sequential sessions; each session will last approximately 120 minutes

(including transition time and instructions)

Each student will be assessed in only one subject and will take the assessment on tablets with keyboards provided by NAEP representatives. NAEP representatives will provide significant support to your school, bring all materials and equipment, including the tablets, and administer the assessment. NAEP recommends that a school staff person be present in each assessment session. The presence of school staff can have a positive impact on students’ motivation and performance.

In December, a list of your school’s selected students will be posted on the MyNAEP website, and a NAEP representative responsible for administering the assessment will contact your school coordinator to discuss assessment details. You are encouraged to meet with faculty members and with students selected for NAEP in order to convey the importance of the assessment. The school may consider offering incentives to encourage active participation.

If you have questions, please contact me at [telephone number] or via email at [email address]. You may register on the MyNAEP website (www.mynaep.com) with your school’s MyNAEP Registration ID number. MyNAEP is a protected site, so you will create your own password. More information about NAEP can be found at http://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/about/schools.asp and at http://www.fldoe.org/accountability/assessments/national-international-assessments/naep/.
