Overview of position

As the Mature & Part-Time Students’ Officer you will be the main elected spokesperson for students at UAL who are mature or part-time. You will also be a spokesperson for the Students’ Union (ARTS SU) at some national conferences. You will be working closely with students, societies, campaign groups and University staff to make positive change for students in your liberation area. You will attend Student Council Meetings and have regular meetings with the sabbatical officers and staff in the SU to put forward to views of students and prioritise the issues that matter. This could lead to more student led events and activities, campaigning for changes in the curriculum or changes in how recruitment is organised.

Training and support / Why should you run
SU Staff, College coordinators & Sabbatical Officers will support you in your role and you will also receive:

Responsibilities / How will you do it
  • Represent the voice of students
  • Developing community within the college and university by spearheading events and creative opportunities for your peers
  • Ensure student views are being heard & acted on at all levels of by representing your peers and acting as the voice of the students with senior staff members.
  • Help students influence the College by developing campaigns around student issues.
  • Direct the creative and strategic direction of ARTS SU activity
  • Be an active member of the Student Executive

  • Work closely with Sabbatical Officers on relevant issues
  • Sit on relevant committees at UAL.

Time commitment / Eligibility
  • If elected you will hold the post from 4 July 2016 to 30 June 2017.
  • You will be required to attend training and it is likely that you will work on some projects with the current officers prior to this date.
  • Apart from various pre-arranged meetings it will be up to you to decide what needs to be done and when you will do it. The role is flexible to fit around your other commitments.

  • You must be a current UAL student and will be during 2016/17
  • You must be a student who is either studying part-time or started your course at the age of 21 if you were an undergraduate or 25 if you were a postgraduate
  • No previous experience is required, but lots of enthusiasm and a willingness to learn are essential.
