Period 2

Objective: Students should be able to write a rule from data table.
Standard: Find succeeding terms in a sequence of numbers
Preparatory work, Homework checking/marking, prerequisite questions etc: 5 Minutes
Class teacher organize the class as required
Resources: OH Transparencies, number sequences on magnetic tape, group worksheet
Mini Lesson: l0 Minutes:
Last week you were doing rules for the Order of Operations. What are the rules for the Order of Operations?
What other rules do you know mathematical or otherwise?
Why do we make rules?
Today we will learn how to make a rule from information given. This will make the math much easier.
First we observe a pattern from which we can make the rule
Place a jumbled number sequence on BB using magnetic tape. Can you rearrange these numbers to make them form a pattern?
What is the pattern? What is the rule that determines the next number? (2,4,6,8,10)
Play several rounds of What’s My Rule to familiarize students with input and output numbers.
Use OHP or chart paper to display the following and determine the rule.

1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5
Mr Jackson’s Rule Box
2 / 4 / 6 / 8 / 10
1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5
Mr Jackson’s Rule Box
2 / 5 / 8 / 11 / 14

9 / 3 / 6 / 4 / 8
Mr Jackson’s Rule Box
28 / 10 / 19 / 13 / 25

Write the rule for each of these and TEST the rule
Discuss strategies for discovering the rule.
Small Group/ Independent Work: 25 Minutes
Each student is to make up a rule and write it down. Each member of the group then gives input numbers to an individual who then supplies the output number based on the rule they have devised.
Extension work: Play the game but this time use fractions as the input.
Which rules were easy and why were they easy to figure out?
Which were hard? Why?
What did you have to know to find the rules?

Journal Writing/ Reflection: 10 Minutes

Make up an input/output table and state the rule.
Will your rule be difficult or easy for your friends to figure out? Why?

Name: …………………………………………

Group Work
Make up a rule and write it below. Then remember it.
Make sure the other group members do not see your rule!
When everybody has created their rule, start the game.
Each member of the group will take turns at being the leader, and other members of the group will have to try and figure out the leader’s rule.
Group members take turns in giving the leader an INPUT NUMBER. The leader will the give the OUTPUT NUMBER.
As the numbers are given, both the leader and group members record the numbers on the charts on the reverse side of the paper.
The object of the game is to guess the leader’s rule.
When someone suggests a rule TEST IT TO SEE IF IT WORKS.
If you finish before other groups, play another round

My rule is:

Leader’s Chart
Group Input Number / My Output Number
Group Members’ Charts
Game 1 / Game 2 / Game 3 / Game 4
Input / Output
/ Input / Output
/ Input / Output
/ Input / Output
