Recitation: Every student in Math 245 must be registered for a recitation section of Math 245 corresponding to your lecture time. The 12 PM lecture time has recitations on Tuesday mornings with Mathew Titus. The 8 AM lecture has recitations on Tuesday afternoon with Sharon Harada. Typically these recitations will consist of a guided group activity and some weeks a short quiz. Your TA will make specifc policies and expectations for your recitation meetings.

Required Materials:

  • Textbook: Mathematics for Management, Life and Social Sciences by Howard L. Rolf
  • WebAssign Subscription (comes with textbook from the OSU bookstore or purchased by itself)
  • Calculator: A two line scientific calculator

Course Webpages:

  • Science.oregonstate.edu/~schloemk/MTH245.htm (course homepage, find all course documents here)
  • WebAssign.com (access online homework assignments)
  • My.oregonstate.edu (Blackboard – check your scores for all OFFLINE items here)

Course Objectives/Outcomes: A successful student in MTH 245 will beable to:

1. Apply techniques of counting, probability, and elements of statisticsrelated to probability distributions.

2. Apply introductory matrix algebra to solve systems of linear equations.

3. Apply graphical linear programming techniques.

4. Apply all of these techniques to solve problems and interpret the solutions in context.

Grading: The final course grade will be computed according to the weighting below.

Homeworkn (online)15%

Activities/Labs15%

Quizzes15%

Midterm Exam25%

Final Exam30%

A-/A 90 – 100% B-/B/B+ 80 – 89% C-/C/C+ 70 – 79% D-/D/D+ 60 – 69% F 0 – 59%

Homework: Homework assignments are completed online through WebAssign. There will typically be 1 or 2 assignments every week. It will be clearly announced in class when homework assignments are assigned and when they are due.

Activities: During your recitation every week there will be an in class group activity. These activities must be turned in either at the end of the corresponding recitation session or at the beginning of the next recitation.

Quizzes: Short quizzes will be given at the end of recitations most weeks (consult course calendar). One 3x5 note card (handwritten, both sides) and a standard scientific calculator will be permitted on these quizzes. The lowest quiz score will be dropped.

Exams: There will be one midterm exam and one final exam. You will be permitted a 3x5 note card (handwritten, both sides) on the midterm and 2 3x5 cards (handwritten, both sides) on the final exam as well as a standard scientific calculator. The dates and times of the exams are as follows:

Midterm Exam – Tuesday, February 8 at 6:00 pm

Final Exam – Monday, March 14 at 4:00 pm

The final exam is cumulative (covers all material from the entire term) and therefore retests the material that was on the midterm exam (but not as extensively). Therefore, if the final exam score is higher than one of the midterm exam score, at the end of the term in the computation of the final course grade, the midterm score and final exam score will be averaged together and this new score will be used to replace the midterm score.

Course Policies:

  • Late homework/labs will not be accepted. Homework assignments will be open for at least five days. This should be ample time to deal with any issues that may arise (conceptual, computational OR TECHNIAL). Activities/Labs are always due at the beginning of the following week’s recitation.
  • Missed quizzes cannot be made up. The lowest quiz score is dropped – this can be used to drop the score of 0 resulting from a missed quiz if missing one is unavoidable.
  • Please check your posted grades frequently. If there have been any errors or omissions in the posted grades you can immediately remedy this by presenting the returned, graded item. This should be done within one week of the item being returned to you. ABSOLUTELY NO ALTERATIONS TO POSTED SCORES WILL BE MADE AFTER THE FINAL EXAM HAS BEEN TAKEN – resolve any issues with me before then.
  • The final course grade is earned by the student by accumulating points on items throughout the term. All scores are posted throughout the term so the student is aware of their scores at all times. At the end of the term the instructor merely reports to the student and the registrar what the earned course grade is. REQUESTS FOR ALTERNATE FINAL GRADEs ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO GRANT – you receive the grade you have earned. There is no justification to assign a different grade.

Succeeding in Math 245:

  • Read over the text before and/or after lecture
  • Start homework assignments as soon as the section is covered
  • Always complete your homework assignments
  • Participate fully in the activities
  • Ask questions before, during and after class/recitation as well as in your instructor’s and/or TA’s office.
  • Visit the Math Learning Center (MLC) in Kidder 108 for drop in help with homework or reviewing topics.
  • Work together in groups on homework and studying

Students in need of Accomodations: Accommodations are collaborative efforts between students,
faculty and Disability Access Services (DAS). Students with accommodations approved through DAS are responsible for contacting the faculty member in charge of the course prior to or during the first week of the term to discuss accommodations. Students who believe they are eligible for accommodations but who have not yet obtained approval through DAS should contact DAS immediately at 737-4098.

Academic Honesty: Students are expected to be familiar with OregonStateUniversity's Statement of
Expectations for Student Conduct.Academic dishonesty is defined as an intentional act of deception in one of the following areas:

  • cheating- use or attempted use of unauthorized materials, information or study aids
  • fabrication- falsification or invention of any information
  • assisting- helping another commit an act of academic dishonesty
  • tampering- altering or interfering with evaluation instruments and documents
