Mrs. Zayed

Mathematics Class

Welcome to 8th grade math class. This course is centered on inquiry-based instruction, real life applications, and teaching multiple learning strategies, which as a teacher, I have always strived for. I will utilize this approach, but also direct and individualized instruction as well in order to create a balanced and differentiated approach to classroom instruction.

Topics to be covered:

  • Real numbers, Exponents, and Scientific Notation
  • Proportional and Non-proportional Relations and Functions
  • Solving Equations and System of Equations
  • Geometry
  • Statistics

Consumable Textbook:

Go Math: Middle School Grade 8. Published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

Online Textbooks:

The textbook can be found online at Students will have a given username and password to access the textbook and other features such as real-life videos as well as concept review videos to help with homework. Some homework assignments can also be done online as well.

CLASSROOM RULES

In addition to the school’s PBIS expectations (Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe), students need to remember the following:

1. Listen carefully.

Know when to talk (and when not to).

2. Quickly follow my directions.

There’s a reason for them.

3. Come to class prepared.

Don’t expect others to save you.

4. Treat classroom and peoplewith respect. Use polite and appropriate language.

It feels good to be nice.

Offensive, derogatory, and profane terms are not tolerated. In order to have a

safe classroom environment where all students feel comfortable, no put downs,

swear words, or slang words with demeaning connotations will be

accepted.Remember, if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say it at all!

5. Do not ask to leave the roomunless it’s an emergency.

Believe me, it’s not worth it

6. Never line up at the door before dismissal

Please remain in your seat until I have dismissed you.Never line up at the door

before dismissal.Remember, I dismiss you, not the bell.

Please understand that a class period is only 42 minutes, and every minute is important!

If students follow these rules, the class is able to accomplish the goal for that day!

*Severe Clause: Student will be sent to the office immediately for fighting or gross insubordination

Supplies:

You are required to bring the following supplies with you on a daily basis:

1.At least two pencils

2.Red pen/pencil for corrections

3.Binder with 5 subject dividers

4.Spiral notebook

5. Loose leaf paper

6.TI 30 Calculator

7.Graph paper

8. Protractor

Student Expectations:

Students are expected to:

  1. Attend class regularly.
  1. Take notes daily in their math spiral.
  1. Complete all assignments.
  1. Complete their own work, copying will not be tolerated.

Any student(s) caught copying will earn a zero for that assignment, if the problem continues further action will be taken.

5.Seek out additional help if they are not comfortable with the concept at hand. I am available for help in the morning or afterschool.

Homework:

I cannot stress the importance of homework in this class! Homework is practice in preparation for upcoming assessments. If a student fails to complete assignments, they may struggle with these assessments.

  • All homework will be posted daily on my webpage.
  • Students will be responsible for grading their own assignments. It is important that they are honest when checking their work and to ask questions when necessary. Once again, failure to do so may result in students struggling with the assessments.
  • All homework and classwork will be kept in a three-ring binder, separating each module with a subject divider. Students are NOT allowed to throw these assignments out until they are directed to do so.

NO EXCEPTIONS

Class notes:

  • Class notes are required and should be completed in their math spiral.

***IMPORTANT***

SHOWING WORK: Students must show work on all classwork, assignments, and assessments. Seeing students’ steps is an important part in assessing their progress. It is through the work that I am able to find areas of strengths as well as their weaknesses. Students that do not show the necessary work may lose points on their assessments.

Absences:

If a student is absent it is their responsibility to make up any missing work-this includes notes, homework, and assessments.

Students may go to my.hrw.com, login, and view the Math on the Spot video for

the lesson that was missed.

Notes are to be copied from another classmate on your own.

Homework will be posted on the web page.

The absent policy in the hand book will be followed.

Assessments need to be made up during class or after school.

Parent Expectations:

Parents are expected to encourage their child to complete assignments so their child can prepare for assessments.

Parents are expected to check their child’s assignment notebook and/or my HW page on the school’s website, on a daily basis (If necessary).

Parents are expected to check their child’s grade on Power School weekly.

Parents are expected to encourage their child to seek extra help if they are struggling (extra help includes, but it is not limited to, study hall and academic assistance).

Teacher Responsibility and Expectations:

Teacher will update Power School at least once a week.

Teacher will work with the parent and the struggling student.

Teacher will provide additional help when needed.

I have HIGH EXPECTATIONS of all my students. I believe each and every one of you can do well in this class. If you pay attention, complete the assignments, and ask questions you should be fine.

Remember, this school year is what you make it out to be. Work hard, take responsibility for yourself and actions, and use the tools that are provided to you to ensure a successful school year.
