Mathematical Modeling with Applications Course Syllabus

Course Objective:

The purpose of the Mathematical Modeling Curriculum is to increase student awareness of the importance of mathematics in the modern world. Students will learn how to think systematically and use the precise logic required for mathematical problem solving. This course will focus on real-world problem solving skills relating to modeling, measurement, geometry, and statistics and probability

Grading:

Assignments, tests, projects, classroom activities, and other instructional activities shall be designed to show so that the student’s performance indicates the level of mastery of the state and district objectives. The student’s mastery level shall be a major factor in determining the grade in this course.

Test:40% Daily classwork: 40%Homework: 20%

Teacher Expectations:

Students will be expected to follow the code of conduct outlined in the Lancaster ISD Student Handbook.

No one talks when I am talking.

  1. Entering class – be on time or I will mark you tardy
  2. Raise your hand when you want to speak or if I make a mistake (be respectful)
  3. Getting supplies – my desk is MINE…do not ever touch!

You may buy a pencil for 50 cents…but you need to be prepared when class starts – so get what you need in advance.

  1. When I have to leave the room / or when a guest comes in the room – it should be quiet…So quiet you can listen in on the teacher gossip 
  2. Turning in papers…you will pass them up the rows or put them in your folder if asked.
  3. Blowing your nose…you may step into the hall without asking.
  4. Restroom – you have enough time to go in-between classes; I will let you go only in an emergency situation.
  5. Sharpen your pencil at an appropriate time.
  6. Cell phone and mp3 policy – I see it, I take it…no warnings
  7. IDs & Dress Code – follow it – I do.
  8. Calculators are a privilege – do not damage them or misuse them, they cost the district $100 each. Pick your number up on the way in and all will be returned to their respectful number slot before anyone will be allowed to leave the room. I reserve the right to take them away from you at any time.
  9. NEVER herd by the door waiting for the bell – you should be seated
  10. All work must be legible and neat. If I cannot easily read the student’s work it will be returned and counted as late work.

Conference:

8:15-9:05Should you desire to discuss school related issues, I will be available during this time.

Supplies:

4-AAA Batteries, a three-ring binder, notebook paper, graph paper, pencil, Kleenex.

Procedures

Late Work:

  • Late work must be completed in accordance with campus policy. The policy states that work may be turned in up to two days late for a maximum grade of 70.

Make-up Work:

  • District policy states that a student shall be responsible for obtaining and completing the make-up work in a satisfactory manner and within the time specified. Students will find his or her notes in the make-up work folder in the front of the room with the homework assignment. If nothing is there, it is YOUR responsibility to double check with me about what you need to make up. Also, it is the student’s responsibility to come to tutorials to make-up a quiz and/or test.
  • The grade for make-up work after an unexcused absence shall be no higher than a 75.

Extracurricular: Please Read

  • When students leave school at or before 7:45 for an extracurricular activity, they may turn in their assignment that was due on the day of the event the following day without any loss of points.
  • When students leave before class for an extracurricular activity, they are expected to check with me for instructions and assignments that they will miss that day. All assignments must be turned in at the beginning of the next class period.
  • When students leave after class for an extracurricular activity, they will turn in their assignments at the beginning of the next class period.

Testing:

  • All tests will be comprehensive. This material will contain what we have covered in class and the appropriate TEKS objectives.

Keys to Success in this Course

If your child is having a difficult time encourage him or her to follow the suggestions below. Students are always successful when they do all of these consistently.

  • BECOME AN ACTIVE LEARNER. Learning is NOT passive, it requires effort and self discipline.
  • WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING I do on the board.
  • ASK QUESTIONS! Make sure you understand what I'm talking about. If you don't understand, ask me to please go over it again.
  • TAKE NOTES AND STUDY THEM. This course requires a minimum of 15 to 30 minutes a day studying even if you do not have an assignment. If you do this everyday then last minute “cramming” will not be needed. Your test scores will go up and your stress will go down.
  • DO NOT GET BEHIND. When a student fails this is usually the number one reason why.
  • ALWAYS CORRECT TESTS IMMEDIATELYso that you can ask questions and receive help.
  • DO YOUR HOMEWORK! I assign homework so YOU will know exactly what it is you understand or more importantly don’t understand.
  • DO ALL THE ASSIGNMENTS YOURSELF. Getting help from parents, another student, or me is fine, but NEVER just copy someone else's work.
  • ALWAYS copy the problem before working it. (Exception: word problems.)
  • ALWAYS SHOW YOUR WORK. Turning in a list of answers is not acceptable. Assignments done in ink will not be accepted.
  • COME TO TUTORIALSif you find an assignment especially difficult. If you are having problems, TELL ME ABOUT IT!
