B. The Mathematics Framework for California Public Schools, Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve (Mathematics Framework), 2013 Revision (Information/Action)
1. Review of Draft Framework
The Mathematics Curriculum Framework and Evaluation Criteria Committee has completed an initial draft framework for mathematics that incorporates and supports the state-adopted Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. The Mathematics Subject Matter Committee (MSMC)will review the draft framework and recommend to the Instructional Quality Commission (IQC) edits to be made before the draft framework is posted for the first 60-day public review and comment period. You have been provided an electronic copy of initial draft framework.
In reviewing the draft framework, the MSMC will consider its alignment to the State Board–approved guidelines for the framework revision (Attachment 1). The questions on Attachment 2 are intended to facilitate and focus the discussion of the draft framework.
With the approval of the IQC, the draft mathematics framework will be prepared by Curriculum Frameworks and Instructional Resources Division (CFIRD) staff for the first 60-day public comment and review period, which includes posting the draft framework and an online survey form to facilitate comments from the field.
2. Draft Online Survey Questions for the First Public Review and Comment Period
The first 60-day public review and comment process includes an online survey to solicit comments from the field regarding the draft framework. The Mathematics SMC will review the draft survey questions (Attachment 3) for the online survey and forward them to the IQC for approval.
The online survey will allow survey users to respond to questions about the draft framework. For each question, there are five options: Excellent, Good, Fair, Poor, or No Response. Survey users may also provide written comment and suggested edits or additions. Survey users can respond to as many or few questions as they chose. The comments received during the 60-day field review will be presented to the MSMC and the IQC once the comments are compiled by CFIRD staff.
Letters and e-mails will be sent to local educational agencies, as well as mathematics organizations and other stakeholder groups, regarding the online survey and encouraging them to inform staff and members about the opportunity to provide comments.
C. Public Comment on Draft Framework
D. 2014 Mathematics Instructional Materials Primary Adoption (Information/Action)
1. Review of Training Materials
The IQC will hold training for reviewers of materials submitted for the 2014 Mathematics Instructional Materials Primary Adoption on June 18-21, 2013 at the Doubletree Inn in Sacramento. The California Code of Regulations, Title 5 (5CCR), Section 9512(h) requires that the IQC and the SBE approve the materials to be used during the training. You received an email providing you access to electronic copies of those materials, via the CDE exFiles Website, to consider recommending for SBE approval. The CFIRD staff will explain the material and the training process.
2. Recommendation of Reviewers and Facilitators
5CCRSection 9512(a) requires that the IQC recommend to the SBE instructional materials reviewers and content review experts for the 2014 Mathematics Instructional Materials Primary Adoption. You received an email providing you access to the electronic copies of the applications submitted to date, via the CDE exFiles Website, for consideration. In addition, 5CCR Section 9510(k) requires that the SBE approve any non-IQC facilitators. You have also received a list of potential non-IQC facilitators who may be asked to serve, should the need arise. The CFIRD staff will present, in detail, these applicants and potential facilitators.
