Math 8 Syllabus

2014 - 2015

Welcome to Eighth Grade Math! In math class, we will study rational numbers,
patterns in algebra, functions, data and statistics, and geometry. We will be busy! In order to accomplish all of this, it is essential that you stay organized and that we work together. Please read the information below to learn more about eighth grade math.

School & Class Expectations
We will follow Hornet Pride.
Positive – Be committed to the just treatment of others

Respect - Be considerate of self, others, their beliefs, and property
Initiative – Be willing to contribute to your learning
Determination - Be dependable and accountable
Etiquette - Be caring, friendly, and helpful.

Textbook
This year we will use Holt McDougal’s Algebra I book. You will be
assigned a book to use throughout the year, and you will have online access to the
book and its resources. Access to the online textbook is available at my.hrw.com.
Also, a link to the online book can be found on my website. The username and
password are blmsmath81. The online resources are available to help you when you are working on math at home.

Class Materials
You should have a three ring binder for math class. Inside your binder, you should
have a pencil pouch with sharpened pencils, erasers, and a pen. You will need to
bring this binder and your math book to class everyday.

Grades
Your grade will be determined by this breakdown:
Daily homework and class activities...... 30%
Mastery of Learning (tests, quizzes, & projects)...... 70%

Percentages
B+ 87–89% C+ 77-79% D+ 67-69%

A 93–100 B 83-86% C 73-76% D 63-66% F 0-59%
A- 90–92 B- 80-82% C- 70-72% D- 60-62%

Assignments
Several homework problems will be assigned most days. Each assignment will be worth 5 points. In class, we will take notes and participate in activities that will help you complete your homework. Assignments need to be completed in pencil so they can be corrected with ink. Assignments turned in late will receive up to half credit. No credit will be given for assignments turned in after the unit test. Exceptions are made for students with Individual Education Plans.

Tests & Quizzes
Each unit of study will have approximately two quizzes and one test or project.
Tests and quizzes will always be individual assessments, and tests will include
multiple choice problems, free response problems, and review problems. Prior to
each test, there will be an in-class review activity or a review sheet will be handed out. You will be able to retake a test if you receive a low score (as long as all assignments have been completed from the unit). Before retaking a test, you will need to make corrections to your original test. The second test will be another version of the original test and will need to be taken within one week from the time the original test was handed back. The student must arrange a time with the teacher to retake a test as soon as possible.

Calculators
I have a classroom set of TI-30 calculators available for you to use in the
classroom. However, you will want a calculator for home. Although any calculator
will work, I would suggest a scientific calculator if you are going to purchase a
calculator because you will use it in your future math classes.

Absences
You are responsible for collecting notes. The homework is posted in the classroom for you to record into your planner. Arrangements must be made with the teacher to make up missed quizzes and tests.

Extra Help
You are welcome to come to me for help after you have made your best attempt at
an assignment. I am generally available to meet with you before or after school (with the exception of Tuesday afternoons).
Also, please check the online version of the text for homework help online.

I am excited for a fun year with you in my classroom!

Sincerely,

Kevin Gindele
