Math 7 Shopping Project -Honors Name______

Objective: Students will use what they’ve learned about percents and apply it to real world situations.

You have money from Christmas and want to spend it. You’re ready to shop and even have coupons to save some money. Let’s find out how much this little shopping trip is going to cost you!

Directions:

1.  Calculate the missing value(s) for at least 8 items at Stacy’s, Next Buy, and Toys R Fun. This will be attached to your final project.

2.  Decide on at least 2 items from 2 stores that you will buy for yourself, family, or friends.

3.  Create a receipt for the 2 stores (see directions below).

4.  You must use at least one store coupon while you shop which will be deducted from the store total before taxes. (This should be included on the receipt.) Stacy’s 15% off your total, Next Buy 10% off one item, or Toys R Fun 30% off site wide.

5.  Buy lunch at Jason’s Deli; purchase an entrée and a drink, minimum. You will pay tax and leave a 20% tip. Create a receipt for the purchase.

6.  You decide to use a credit card at one of the stores. You’ll pay it off after 3 months. They charge 24.5% interest monthly. When you create the receipt for this purchase make sure to include the price you will end up paying.

7.  Calculate the total price of your shopping trip.

8.  Tell me what you learned during this project. Why did you choose the store you did to charge to the credit card? Would there have been a better option? How much do you think the purchases you made were marked up? What is your reason for this conclusion? Pick a store and find out how much their markup is on an item of your choice. How can you use percents in the real world? Ask a parent or another adult about compound interest, document what they told you and how it might affect your credit card purchase. Answer these questions in complete sentences on the attached sheet of paper.

9.  Create a presentation of a summary of your purchases on 11 x 17 inch paper, poster board, or using Glogster, Prezi, Animoto, or another technology approved by your teacher. Show work and attach to this sheet! You may use a calculator. You will be graded according to the rubric below. This is your major grade. Remember:

Receipts for each store should look like a real receipt and show:

·  Itemized list of purchases with pre-tax cost of each item purchased at that store

·  Correct use of at least one coupon during your shopping trip

·  The sales tax you will pay at that store (see Tax Rates below)

·  When creating the receipt for Jason’s Deli, include a 20% tip
