  • Approval of the meeting minutes. Moved by Cheryl Hinds. Second by Cindy Standish.

  • Regional and Perinatal Systems Meeting – Follow Up
  • Initial meeting took place on November 29th.
  • Cradle Kalamazoo is convening Region 8 Perinatal Care System work. Bronson is taking a leadership role. Next meeting is being planned for early 2017 and a meeting involving more organizations working in the maternal & infant health area is being planned for the spring.
  • Anyone from the MIHC that would like to participate is welcome. Please notify Sondra Fettes or Michelle Datema know so you can get involved.
  • Behavioral Health
  • Group met in October to discussInfant Mortality Reduction Plan Goal 9 – “Promote behavioral health services and other programs to support vulnerable women and infants.”
  • Services exist in the community and we are working to connect people with resources. .
  • IHP has a workgroup on this topic.
  • BC pulse working on broader education for community and integrating mental health into physical health in physician’s offices. Michelle has been in touch with Kathy Szenda Wilson to coordinate efforts.
  • Laurie Hartman discussed Sexual Assault Services program. All services are free. Friends and family can have therapy and services for free as they would also be affected by the assault.
  • Group reviewed free related materials from the National Institutes of Health, Eunice Kennedy Shrive National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

  1. IM Learning Collaborative/Tobacco Task Force
  • Alyssa Stewart, Kristin Roux, Jennifer VanValkenburg and Susan Purchase met and are involved in the State Infant Mortality Learning Collaborative, working to improve low birth weight for babies, focused on Tobacco Cessation/Reduction during pregnancy. This is a quality improvement project and PDSA cycles have just begun.
  • The Michigan Tobacco QuitLine is a FREE online service available to Michigan residents. When you become a member, you get special tools, a support team of coaches, research-based information, and a community of others trying to become tobacco free. Find more information, review their website:
  • Kids Count data shows an increase in tobacco use with pregnant women in Battle Creek.

  1. Breast Feeding and Infant Safe Sleep Presentation – Marji Cyrul, State Breastfeeding Coordinator, MDHHS
  • In addition to serving as the State Breastfeeding Coordinator, Marji also sits on the State’s Infant Safe Sleep Advisory committee.
  • Marji facilitated a training on the benefits of breastfeeding and how it coordinates with infant safe sleep.
  • The presentation was reviewed and approved by both Breastfeeding and Infant Safe Sleep MDHHS staff members. The presentation cannot be printed or shared electronically, however, Marji Cyrul offered to personally present it to any size group when needed.
  • Breastfeeding promotion and infant safe sleep strategies were discussed.
