PARTICLE PHYSICS DIVISION

MATERIALS PROHIBITED FROM DISPOSAL IN

DUMPSTERS/TRASH RECEPTACLES

All Chemicals: / This includes all solvents, all petroleum based paints, all liquid
latex paints, adhesives, sealants, toxic metals, oil, antifreeze,
pesticides, herbicides, solder fluxes, untreated epoxies, acids, etc.
All industrial liquids or / This includes many capacitors, oil or chemical filled ballasts, all
liquid-containing items: / oil-filled filters, cutting fluids, industrial process wastewater
Toxic metals or items / • / Unwanted, unusable and contaminated lead items shall be
contaminated with toxic / disposed of as "hazardous waste;" however, usable lead or lead
metals: / items shall be recycled as scrap metal and labeled "lead."
• / Unwanted beryllium items are "special waste."
• / Other toxic metals or contaminated toxic metals shall be
disposed of as hazardous waste.
Universal waste: / • / Fluorescent lamps and other lamps that contain mercury (e.g.,
high intensity discharge (HID);
• / Batteries (e.g., lithium, lead, silver, nickel-cadmium) other than
Alkaline or nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH). Ni-MH batteries
are recyclable; however, are characterized as "SPECIAL
WASTE."
• / Other mercury containing devices (e.g., Thermostats,
Thermometers, etc.)
Asbestos: / Asbestos-containing items must be disposed of as special waste.
Radiation signslabels: / Contact PPD Radiation Safety for disposal (x2557).
Radioactive materials: / Contact PPD Radiation Safety for disposal (x2557). Note: Naturally
occurring radioactive materials (i.e., grit blast media) shall be
discussed with the PPD Radiation Safety Group (x2557) prior to
any disposal of this type of waste.
Scrap metal and old / Metal, electronic components (i.e., printed circuit boards, wires),
equipment (includes / electrolytic ballasts, solder, empty cans (aerosol, paint cans + lid,
electronic equipment and / etc.) Should be recycled. Scrap metal drums are provided at
components): / various locations throughout the Division.
Large quantities of oil or / A large quantity is considered to be greater than one, thirty-gallon
ethylene glycol spill / garbage bag. Large quantities of cleanup debris shall be disposed
cleanup debris: / of as special waste.
Blasting Media / Blasting items coated with paints containing heavy metals (i.e.,
lead, chromium, cadmium, barium) may result in a hazardous
waste. For this reason, a representative sample of the paint may
need to be tested prior to conducting this type of operation.
Contact the PPD Waste Coordinator well in advance of planned
start date for activity.
Used Oil Filters / Used oil filters shall be disposed of as non-regulated waste or
special waste. Contact the PPD Waste Coordinator for assistance.
Wooden Pallets / Contact Business Services (x4225) for disposal of multiple pallets
(i.e., more than one). A single pallet can be disposed of via twenty
fe yard dumpster.
