In Statistics, curricular content is based on the California State Content Standards, Expected School Wide Learning Results, and the course outline as defined by The College Board.

MATERIALS and ASSIGNMENTS:

Each student will be assigned a math book. Students will receive The Practice of Statistics and its companion book, Strive for a 5 at the beginning of the year. Later on, Statistics students will also check out AMSCO’s AP Statistics.

Students must bring their math book, paper, pencil, and calculator to class daily. Statistics classes will be using a graphing calculator, the TI-84 Plus (TI 83 Plus, TI 83, and TI Nspire are also acceptable). However, if unable to bring one to class, a few calculators will be available for students to check out for the class period. Assignments will be graded daily for the daily grade during the week, but will be turned in for homework credit the first day of the following week. Weekly quizzes will be given on the last day of each week.

EVALUATION:

Regular and timely attendance is mandatory.

Students’ grades are determine in accordance with California State Content Standards in the areas of

·  Mathematic comprehension of the subject

·  Participation in class discussions

·  Listening and taking notes

As assessed through such categories as

·  Homework/Classwork 30%

·  Quizzes 70%

Semester grades will be calculated according to the following formula:

Quarter 1: 40%

Quarter 2: 40%

Final Examination: 20%

The focus of this course is to prepare students to pass the AP Statistics Test which will be administered on Wednesday, May 16th. We will have extra review times that will occur after school and in the evening to help students maximize their performance on the test.

90% and above = A

80% and above but less than 90% = B

70% and above but less than 80% = C

60% and above but less than 70% = D

Less than 60% = F

Note: These percents are the minimum and will not be rounded

The following is on file with the College Board as a part of Stockdale High’s Official Statistics Syllabus

AP Statistics is a course designed for students who are interested in having an introduction to college level Statistics. This is a two semester course that will introduce the students to the major themes of Statistics: Exploring Data (Observing patterns and departures from patterns through the use of graphical displays), Planning a Study (Designing Surveys, Experiments and Observational Studies using appropriate statistical techniques), Anticipating Patterns (Exploring probability theory and producing models using probability and simulation), and Statistical Inference (Formalized decision making based on accepted statistical tests and formulas).

To master these themes, students will be required to develop some skills necessary for success in Statistics. Each student will be expected to be able to work individually as well as together in small groups. Students will be communicating extensively through the written word – much more than a typical math class. Statistics has its own specialized vocabulary. Therefore, all students will maintain their own Statistics Dictionary which defines all bolded terms from the text in the student’s own words. This will be a very active class as we will generate and gather our own data to analyze. Ultimately students will be applying what they have learned through major projects aimed at demonstrating competency in the major themes. Students will also be using technology on a daily basis through the use of graphing calculators. Finally, students will evaluate and review statistics as presented in the popular media, comparing what has been offered there in light of the four major strands that we have covered.

Since Statistics is a rigorous course, it is expected that students who sign up for the class should have successfully completed all courses in the Mathematics sequence at least through Advanced Algebra. It is recommended that students have at least a B average in their Math and English courses (since the students will be required to do a great deal of written communication). A TI-83+ is necessary for the course and each student is expected to have one on a daily basis. One major goal of our program is to help students successfully pass the AP Exam. Therefore, all students will be expected to attend after school review sessions in the Spring. Furthermore, students will be taking weekly quizzes that model the AP test where half of the questions will be challenging Multiple Choice and the other half will be open ended questions and investigative tasks.
