WELCOME & PHILOSOPHY

We would like to welcome you to the Mater Dei High School Swim and Dive Team. We have over130 student-athletes who will be competing on all levels. Besides the physical and social benefits each student receives from being a partof Mater Dei Swim and Dive, we aim to see each student-athlete learn to communicate, become responsible, develop commitment, and value the opportunities being given to them. There are only four years ofopportunity for a student to participate in high school athletics. Our desire as coaches is toprovide each student with the opportunity to perform at their personal potential, not only in the pool, but in the classroom and in life. We feel that Mater Dei Swim and Diveprovides this opportunity!

TEAM COMMUNICATION METHODS

We value good communication between coaches, students and parents. Each needs to dotheir part to make the program succeed to its highest potential. Here are the methods we will use tocommunicate with students and parents: MD Swim Team Page – emails sent from coaches (Do we have your correct email so you receive them?), text messages, phone calls – Sometimes, more can be accomplished by talking live than excessive backand forth emails, and personal meetings – please feel free to set up a personal meeting at any time.

CONTACTING THE COACHES

1. Athletes should be the primary communicator with the coaches. Parents should not have tobe the ones to notify of scheduling issues etc.

2. If you have an issue with a coach’s action or decision, go to them FIRST to discuss, not 1,2, or 3 levels above them. If it can’t be resolved with them, THEN consider taking it to thenext level up. Example progression: Assist. Coach – Head Coach – Assoc AD – AD – VP)

PRACTICE GROUPS & TRAINING

Coed Practices will be divided into 3-4 groups by ability. Groups will be determined by coaching staff. The goal is for everyone to train directly after school.

Morning Workouts

Fall/Winter pre-season training will take place primarily in the morning. We will offer bothpool sessions and dryland strength & conditioning sessions. If possible try to avoid takingZero Block classes to avoid conflicts with training times. During season we will havemorning sessions for some groups.

SPRING BREAK PRACTICES

THESE PRACTICESARE MANDATORY and are at a very important time of the season to reach your fullpotential at the League and CIF Championships. PLEASE DO NOT SCHEDULE family vacationsduring our Spring Break Training.

STRENGTH and CONDITIONING

To be successful in swimming requires tremendous amounts of core strength; shoulder stability, mobility and strength; and leg power for kicking, dives, and push offs. Dryland training willbe an integral part of our program and not just supplemental. We are very blessed at Mater Dei to have weight room and dryland trainingfacilities including multiple all weather fields and synthetic track. Each team is required to pay a feefor thesefocused sessions, so we pass on the expense to the athletes who participate. See Fees &Requirements page for amounts. The fees for these sessions will be divided amongst all the athletes whether they toparticipate or not. Participation in the S&C Program is required for members of the swimteam to ensure their full development as an athlete. Some will be excused based on other sports participation or experience.

Strength and Dryland Apparel Requirements:

You must have your Nike Team Shorts, Mater Dei T-shirt – (Red), and Running Shoes. Athletes need to be dressed appropriately for all dryland sessions. School clothes and shoes are not appropriate or safe for the activities required. Mater Dei is a Nike sponsored school.
