COURSE PREREQUISITE MAT 0028 (Developmental Mathematics II) or satisfactory score on College Placement Test

Last day to DROP with refund: January 16, 2015

COURSE DESCRIPTION

MAT 1033 extends the algebraic skills of MAT 0028 (Developmental Mathematics II) to prepare students for College Algebra (MAC 1105). Advanced work with polynomials, radicals, equations, and graphing make up the major part of the course. Three credits.

Course objectives

1.  The student will be able to learn the skills and concepts of algebra needed to successfully complete MAC 1105.

2.  The student will be able to use real number properties in the simplification of algebraic expressions.

3.  The student will be able to know fundamental approaches to the solution of linear and quadratic equations.

4.  The student will be able to understand the use of graphing as an effective means of understanding fundamental relationships between two variables.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

TESTING: There will be five (5) tests throughout the semester. NO MAKE-UP TESTS WILL BE GIVEN. The lowest test grade will be dropped. A comprehensive final examination will be given during the final examination week at the end of the semester and it is mandatory for all.

QUIZZES: Students may expect a quiz every class meeting on the assigned exercises for that class meeting. All work must be shown for credit. Quizzes will be over the assigned HW.

HOMEWORK: Homework will be assigned for each section. It is highly recommended that you keep up with the homework and do all the problems assigned. The quizzes will be based on the homework assignments. See assigned homework problems at the end of the syllabus.

Calculator Policy: A scientific and or graphing calculator (up to a TI 84) is permitted for this course. TI-89 or higher calculators are NOT permitted. Cell-phone calculators will NOT permitted. Some pre-programmed calculators will not be permitted on tests because students are required to be able to perform these tasks by hand.

GRADING POLICY: The average of the four tests will comprise 60% of the course grade. NO MAKE-UP TESTS WILL BE GIVEN. The quizzes will comprise 15% of the grade. The final exam is comprehensive and compulsory and will comprise 25% of the final grade. The grading scale is:

90 – 100 = A

80 – 89 = B

70 – 79 = C

60 – 69 = D

Below 60 = F

Last day to change to Audit or withdraw with a grade of “W” is March 25, 2015.

ATTENDANCE AND WITHDRAWAL POLICY

Students are expected to attend class regularly and on time. The college wide attendance policy is included in the Syllabus Addendum: http://www.spcollege.edu/addendum/#attend. The policy notes that each instructor is to exercise professional judgment and define “active participation” in class (and therefore “attendance”), and publish that definition in each syllabus.

An active participant of this class will have not missed more than the equivalent of two weeks of class. Furthermore, a student will attend class for the entire allotted class time. If a student is excessively late and/or leaves class early, he or she may be considered to not be an active participant. Emergencies happen, if one is to arise, please communicate with your instructor to come up with an appropriate attendance plan.

Students who are not actively participating in class as defined in an instructor's syllabus will be reported to the Administration during the week following the last date to withdraw with a “W” (as posted in the academic calendar on the college’s web site). A grade of “WF” will be assigned to students who are not actively participating during the week following the last day to withdraw with a W grade.

Absences for religious reasons – Students are to notify instructors in advance of an anticipated absence to observe religious holidays. There is no penalty for such absences. Students are responsible for making up work covered during such an absence and should be given a reasonable amount of time to do so. Major class assignments, exams and official ceremonies should be scheduled at times that do not conflict with major religious holy days when possible.

IMPORTANT COLLEGE POLICY REGARDING COURSE DROP-ADD PERIOD AND AUDIT INFORMATION

Students CANNOT add a course following the 1st day the class meets. Students CAN drop a course during the 1st week of class and be eligible for a refund. (See a counselor/advisor to finalize your schedule, so you won’t be left without the classes you want or need). Students may not change from credit to audit status after the end of the first week of classes.

In the event that a hurricane or other natural disaster causes significant damage to St. Petersburg College facilities, you may be provided the opportunity to complete your course work online. Following the event, please visit the college Web site for an announcement of the college’s plan to resume operations.

You should familiarize yourself with the emergency procedures and evacuation routes located in the buildings you use frequently. Located in each classroom is an Emergency Response Guide (flip-chart) that contains information for proper actions in response to emergencies. You should be prepared to assess situations quickly and use good judgment in determining a course of action. You should evacuate to assembly areas in an orderly manner when an alarm sounds or when directed to do so by college faculty or staff or emergency services personnel. In face to face courses your instructor will review the specific campus plans for emergency events.
