Introduction: The fly fishing masters ESACT tract is a program where the student contracts with the instructor for most of the requirements for course completion. There will be a menu of possible activities, options or tasks from which the student will select their program. Students will be able to take the course several times keeping a portfolio and picking a progression of tasks to fulfill further requirements. The credits earned will satisfy the general degree Esact requirements while providing the student the opportunity to immerse themselves in an activity culture. It is the hope of the masters’ faculty that these students will than is more likely to continue participation in fly-fishing for the rest of their active adulthood.
Enrollment: We would like to start the course with 11 students this Summer . This number will provide several advantages. This is a large enough group to generate interaction among the students but small enough to be manageable to the instructor. Also there can be some recruitment from recent angling and casting classes.
Prerequisites: Students should have taken either the angling or casting class through ESACT on the University Park campus. Additionally students may be considered if they are able to demonstrate a sufficient working skill/knowledge of fly tying/ fishing for trout to the program coordinator.
Sample of menu items: This session of the Masters will be based on preparing for and fishing four local streams. The following is a basic list of menu items that you can contract with the instructor to meet your course requirements. This is not an inclusive list and your additional impute is actively solicited.
- Fly Tying Skills Share patterns, recipes, techniques, materials, variations
of flies for each stream. Demonstrate at least one fly to
the group during class time. Or Buy your Flies!
- Stream logs 4 streams - in-depth (Pun) analysis of the aquatic make up of
each stream. Suggested flies, fishing techniques and where to go during various times of the year.
- Tutor Summer Spend time sharing knowledge with multi Cultural- Students Multi-Cultural June 30,July 6,7, 8, 12, 13, 14 15. Evenings 6-8. More later.
- Student input Students develop their own ideas as to how they would meet the course requirements. Must have instructor agreement for each component.
Field trips Group of class students will take and file reports on performance
Field trips. To Spring Creek, Fishing Creek, Spruce creek, Little Juniata and Penns Creek
Evaluation: Student will be required to choose at least 25-30 hours of activities. They will hand in a log for each field trip to document their progress and do an end of semester evaluation of the course.
