Legal and Social Issues in Health Administration

Prerequisites

Graduate standing.

Description

This course includes an examination of legaland ethical aspects of contemporary issuesassociated with the health services administrationprocess.

Objectives

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  1. Identifykey legal issuesconfronting health service administrators.
  2. Describethe integration between legal, moral, ethical, cultural, and social values in which practicing health service practitioners, administrators, patients, and institutions are confronted and used in the decision-making process.
  3. Describe the legal process, legal issues related to privacy and confidentiality, informed consent, social welfare, antitrust, medical malpractice, and liability in healthcare administration and propose management strategies to address them.
  4. Demonstrate analytical, communication, and research skills appropriate to practicing HSO managers, which areaddressed in this course.
  5. Assess current research in health services administration to answer research questions about common management problems in HSOs.
  6. Evaluate applicable scenario to apply legally and socially oriented health services administration strategies to meet business objectives.

Purpose

To provide prospective and actual healthcare managers and advisors the legal, regulatory, and socialcontext within which to manage a compliant healthcare enterprise, ensure its effectiveness despite the environmental constraints within which it must function, and meet the broader needs of society while attending to the best interests of each patient and stakeholder.MSM Healthcare Management concentration requirement.
