The Confucius Institute at University of Cape Town

The Confucius Institute brings Introductory Chinese(汉语入门)to

UCT students in residence. All are welcome to sign up, although places will be allocated on a first come, first served, basis. There is no charge for the course.

The course will focus on the basics of Chinese, from phonetics and tone-practice, the written system of Chinese, to some simple situational dialogues. It will help you to understand basic Chinese, orto lay a foundation for your further study of Chinese as a foreign language, thus engaging yourselves in China-related studies, exchanges and business activities. There will be introduction to the history and civilization of the Chinese people, the geography of China, Chinese art and literature, Chinese folk cultures, and Chinese cuisine.

The course will use various teaching and learning approaches, and will be highly interactive, using multimedia, movies, and practice in class.

Details are as follows:

  • The course will be offered from 2 August for twelve sessions (from the beginning of August to 15 September 2010)
  • There will be two lectures (one hour and a half) a week depending on the programme to be agreed with students involved in the course.
  • Class size will be limited to 30 participants - there may be more than one class depending on the number of students who wish to participate.
  • A certificate of successful completion of the course will be awardedto participants who write and pass a simple examination and oral at the end of the course.
  • For course participants who do not wish to write the examination, a certificate of attendance (requiring participation in at least 10 of the 12 sessions) will be provided.
  • The course is FREEfor registered UCT students (proof of registration will be required).
