Marshall School of Business
MBA Code of Honor and Standards of Professional Behavior
We, the members of the Marshall community, are bound by a shared responsibility to maintain the highest standards of academic integrity, professional conduct, and social responsibility. . We commit to creating an environment of free and open inquiry that celebrates diversity, tolerates dissent, ion and facilitates learning. . We value honesty, friendship, professional relationships, and teamwork, and we embrace our status as leaders and role models in the academic and business communities.
We are committed to upholding the highest ethical standards. . We do not lie, cheat, or steal, nor do we tolerate those who do. . We are considerate of the impact that our actions and decisions have on others, and we constantly strive to benefit the common good while achieving our personal goals. . We make this commitment for the advancement of our school and our community.
The following academic, community and professional standards have been set forth for the purposes of creating and maintaining an highly effective learning community and business environment at Marshall. . These standards are based on three key expectations:
v Enforcement of the academic standards set by USC and Marshall
v Mutual respect for and commitment to all students, faculty, staff and external constituencies
v Preservation of our reputation as a top business school
We will follow the University Governance policies outlined in the SCampus 2007/08 Student Guidebook. . Among these policies are general principles of academic honesty. . These principles include and incorporate the concept of respect for the intellectual property of others, the expectation that individual work will be submitted unless otherwise allowed by an instructor, and the obligations both to protect one’s own academic work from misuse by others as well as to avoid using another’s work as one’s own. . This includes, but is not limited to, the following:
v Obtaining for oneself or providing for another person a solution to homework, a project or other assignments, or a copy of an exam or exam key without the knowledge and expressed consent of the instructor.
v Unauthorized collaboration on a project, homework or other assignment unless expressly part of the assignment in question or expressly permitted by the instructor.
Failure to adhere to the academic conduct standards set forth by these guidelines and our programs will not be tolerated by the USC Marshall community and can lead to dismissal.
We will develop and maintain a constructive and dynamic learning community in all class sessions, professional meetings and program events. . Disruptive behavior is not permitted. . Such behavior includes inappropriate use of technology, tardiness, lack of preparedness, and entering or exiting a room while a class or meeting is in session. .
We will be present, prepared and engaged for the duration of all sessions. We are expected to attend every class meeting and professional session according to our enrollment assignment and commitments. . If we are unable to attend, we are expected to notify the appropriate professor or staff member as far in advance as possible. . Unexcused absences will negatively impact the learning environment as well as individual performance in the class.
We will arrive for classes and meetings on time so that all sessions can start and end according to the schedule. . Penalties for late admission and poor attendance will be subject to the discretion of the faculty or staff member leading the session in question. .
Laptop and internet usage is not permitted during academic or professional sessions unless otherwise stated by the respective professor or staff member. . Use of other personal communication devices during academic or professional sessions is considered unprofessional and is not permitted. . Videotaping faculty lectures is not permitted, due to copyright infringement regulations. . Voice recording may be permitted if approved by the professor. . Use of any recorded material is reserved exclusively for USC Marshall MBA students.
We will help maintain and protect our facilities, our resources and our community at all times.
We hold ourselves accountable for unyielding integrity, truthfulness, and professionalism in all of our interactions and relationships. . We will take care to represent ourselves, our program, our school and our university to the best of our abilities at all times.
We will honor commitments to current and prospective employers and will not void implicit or explicit employment agreements. . This includes but is not limited to notifying the Career Resource Center and appropriate professional staff of any existing agreements of tuition support with an existing employer. . Should such an agreement exist, we will notify our existing employer of our intent to use career services and secure communication from our employer, approving such usage prior to soliciting or engaging in any activity directly linked to a possible change in employment.
This Code of Honor was created for students, by students, and is aligned with the guidelines and philosophies established by SCampus and the USC Code of Ethics for the betterment of our community and the USC Marshall School of Business.
