LEAVE OF ABSENCE

Applicable Policies and Procedures

WHO SHOULD APPLY FOR A LEAVE OF ABSENCE?

A student who has been admitted to a graduate degree program must enroll at USC for each fall and spring semester each year until s/he has satisfactorily completed all degree requirements. MBA.PM students entering the program after Fall ’98 must enroll at USC for each fall, spring, and summer semester each year. A student who must skip a required semester should petition for a Leave of Absence.

A student who skips a semester without requesting a Leave of Absence is considered to have quit school. When the student wants to return to USC to complete the program, the student will have to apply for Reinstatement. Reinstatement is not guaranteed, and, if reinstated, the student will be subject to all of the requirements for the degree in effect at the time of reinstatement.

A student who has been granted a Leave of Absence does not need to apply for reinstatement the semester following the approved leave. Also, the student will be allowed to complete his/her degree under the requirements in effect when he/she was originally admitted.

RULES and REGULATIONS:

Because interruptions of enrollment can cause problems in the continuity of course work within a student’s graduate program, leaves of absence are generally discouraged. In the event that one becomes necessary, the following rules apply:

  • The request for a Leave of Absence must be received prior to the last day to drop or add courses for the applicable semester.
  • The student must be in good standing and making satisfactory progress toward the degree.
  • The student must have compelling reasons (e.g., approved study abroad, sustained ill health, temporary work relocation) for requesting the leave.
  • An approved leave may not exceed one calendar year. Within the five year time limit allowed to complete the Master’s degree, a maximum of (no more than) four semesters may be allowed for leaves of absence.
  • During the period of the leave, the student is not entitled to assistance from the faculty or use of university facilities.
  • If granted, the period of leave is not counted in the time allowed for the completion of degree requirements.
  • A student who does not register for classes at the end of an approved leave (for the semester identified on the reverse side of this form) is no longer considered to be an active graduate and must apply for reinstatement to the appropriate school (Marshall School of Business or Leventhal School of Accounting) prior to returning to USC. Reinstatement is not automatic, and, if reinstated, the student will be subject to all of the requirements for the degree in effect at the time of reinstatement.
  • For further information or consideration of special circumstances Marshall School of Business graduate students should contact their program advisor in their program office. (For example, an MBA.PM student should contact the MBA.PM Program office, FTMBA students should contact the FTMBA Program office, etc.)

WITHDRAWAL FROM CLASSES:

If you decide to request a leave of absence after you have already enrolled through the USC registration process, you must take action to officially withdraw from your classes. (Submitting a Leave of Absence request will not automatically cancel your enrollment.) For information regarding how to withdraw from classes contact either

The USC Registrar at the RegistrationBuilding, 601 Exposition Boulevard; Registration Department, Los Angeles, CA90089-0912 [Phone: (213) 740-8500; Fax: (213) 740-7995]

All withdrawals must be requested, received and processed by the last day to drop a class without a mark of “W” to be eligible for a  refund. Failure to withdraw may result in failing grades on your USC transcript.
