Friday, September 9, 2011
This workshop will address the many ways in which psychological trauma affects women in their diverse identities and social realities. The workshop will begin with a discussion of the various kinds of trauma, including DSM-IV, insidious trauma and micro-aggressions, betrayal trauma. Distinctions between PTSD and Complex Trauma (CT) will also be covered, with particular attention to how sexism and gender hierarchies create risks of trauma for women. A model for understanding women’s identity development in the context of personal power and powerlessness, as well as in the framework of other aspects of self, such as ethnicity, social class, and sexual orientation will be described.
The workshop will then shift to the practicalities of doing trauma-informed work. Therapists as trauma survivors, vicarious trauma, and client-therapist dynamics evoked by the presence of the trauma narrative in the room will be addressed. The use of evidence-based psychotherapy relationships as a foundation for trauma practice will be described and discussed.
