An integral part of the Medical University of South Carolina, the MUSC Children's Hospital is dedicated to enhancing the health of children throughout South Carolina, and to providing an environment that supports excellence in pediatric patient care, teaching and research.
Built in 1987, Children's Hospital is South Carolina's largest and most comprehensive pediatric healthcare center. The hospital houses the only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in the region where the tiniest newborns are provided state-of-the-art care. The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, the only one in the region, is staffed exclusively by trained pediatric critical care physicians and nurses.

The MUSC Team for March for Babies has continued to enhance their fundraising efforts over the years and now is the host to several fundraisers including their Blue Jeans for Babies event, Bake Sales and friendly competitions between departments at the hospital. MUSC has continued to be one of our top fundraising teams over the years and we cannot thank them enough for their efforts.
This year, the Medical University of South Carolina, Department of Ob/Gynreceived $57,389for the continued implementation of POP, the Progesterone Outreach Program, an educational campaign on 17- hydroxyprogesterone caproate (17P), a drug designed to reduce the risk of preterm births for women who have experienced a prior preterm birth. MUSC will provide educational awareness on appropriate administration to obstetrical providers throughout the Low Country. This grant is given in honor of Select Health of South Carolina, Inc., our Premier Prematurity Campaign Partner.

Tain-Yen Hsia, MD, MSc, Assistant Professor MUSC Department of Surgery
Title:“Wireless Sensors for Intracardiac Monitoring in Congenital Heart Defects”; project’s goal is to prevent post-surgical complications and deaths in babies with heart defects.

Xuejun Wen, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor Clemson-MUSC Bioengineering Program
Title:“Developing "Living" Tissue-engineered Cochlear Implants for Hearing Restoration in Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Infants”; project’s goal is to develop and test the efficacy of a new generation of cochlear implants, electronic hearing devices that are surgically implanted in the inner ear to help restore hearing in some individuals with serious hearing impairment.

Laura Goetzl, MD, Assistant professor in Maternal Fetal Medicine Department of OB/GYN, MUSC
Title:“Determinants of Fetal Inflammatory Exposure at Term”; project’s goal is to prevent CP, which occurs in about 1 in 1,000 full-term births.

Lakshmi D. Katikaneni, MDDepartment of Neonatology
Title:“Neurological Assessment of Infants with Brain Injury from Chorioamnionitis”; project’s goal is to study brain damage resulting from chorioamnionitis (intrauterine infection) by using new neuroimagining techniques.
