Dr. Maurice Hunt, Vice President of the 2007 South-Central Renaissance Conference, recently presided in San Antonio at the March 8-10, 2007 convocation, in the absence of the 2007President. He conducted the Executive Board Meeting andthe Business Meeting, and he presided at the Saturday Luncheon. Dr. Hunt is the S-CRC President for 2008. Presenting papers at the conference were Baylor Honors College Assistant Professor Phillip Donnelly, "Translation and Rhetorical Ends in 'Lily's Grammar' (1542)" and BaylorEnglish Graduate students Bethany Getz, "Transparent Rhetoric: The Son's Restoration in Paradise Regained," and Evan Getz, "'Graces all, and is not anywhere': Cosmology, Poetics and Beauty in Lucy Hutchinson's Order and Disorder."

The Editor of the Journal, The Upstart Crow: A Shakespeare Journal, has informed Dr. Maurice Hunt that his article titled "Cassio's Coat" has been accepted for publication and will appear in the 2008 annual volume of this publication.

The following Baylor English department faculty membersand graduate students participated in the 2007 College Conference of Teachers of English, hosted in College Stationduring March 1-3, 2007 by TexasA & MUniversity and BlinnCollege. Drs. Maurice Hunt (Past President)and Mona Choucair (Councilor) met with the other members of the Executive Committee on March 1st. Dr. Choucair also presented a paper titled "Teacher Preparation 101: A New Slant on an Important Topic," and sheChaired a Composition panel. In this section, Dr. Coretta Pittman presented a paper titled "Prioritizing Subject Matter: Writing or Writing about Politics." This paper won the 2007 CCTERandy Popkin Award for the best paper on a Composition/Rhetoric topic. Dr. Hunt presented a paper titled "James FenimoreCooper's The Spy and Shakespeare's Measure for Measure." Dr. James Barcusstaffed a table, which made attendees more aware ofopportunities inand strengthsof the AP Program administered by theEducational Testing Corp.Baylor Englishgraduate students presenting papers, with their titles, are Eric Schaefer, "Processed Sugar and 'manufactured history': Twain's EarlyColonial Discourse in Roughing It"; and Jamie S. Crouse, "Subversion Subverted: The Problem of Gender in Byron's The Corsair."

Dr. William V. Davis’ essay on R. S. Thomas has appeared in the Gale series: “R. S. Thomas,” British Writers (Supplement XII) (Farmington Hills, MI: Thomson Gale Publishers, 2007), 279-94.

Dr. Pittman presented her paper, Prioritizing Subject Matter: Writing or Writing about Politics, at the CCTE conference on March 2, 2007 in College Station, Texas.
Dr. Pittman’s paper, Prioritizing Subject Matter: Writing or Writing about Politics, won the Randy Popken Memorial award for best Rhetoric and Composition at the CCTE conference.
Dr. Pittman’s essay, “Black Women’s Stories and the Trouble with Ethos: Harriet Jacobs, Billie Holiday, and Sister Souljah,” is forthcoming in Rhetoric Society Quarterly in Winter 2007.
Dr. Pittman’s essay, “Historical Moments, Historical Words: Common’s Artistic Contribution to Rhetorical Studies,” has been accepted for inclusion in Agency in the Margins, forthcoming in Fairleigh-Dickinson Press.

Mary Kolner presented a paper, " 'The shadow which turns the corner': The Two Visions of Brideshead Revisited" on February 23rd at the 2007 Louisville Conference on Literature and Culture Since 1900.

Andrew Armond, one of our recent PhD graduates, has accepted a tenure-track position at OklahomaBaptistUniversity. The appointment is effective this fall. Congratulations to Andrew!

Information has been received from SaintFrancisCollege concerning a call for papers for the American Drama Conference. The conference will take place October 4-6, 2007. The conference invites papers on any aspect of American drama, playwrights, and theater. Of particular interest are discussions connecting playwrights to each other and to social, political, historical, and aesthetic issues. Papers on stagecraft, performance, and production history are also welcomed. Papers should not exceed 10 pages for a twenty-minute presentation. Deadline for submissions is June 15, 2007.
