The Norfolk SPCAis searching for an Executive Director to manage its no-kill facility located at916 Ballentine Boulevard,Norfolk, VA 23504.Established in 1892, the Norfolk SPCAoperates as a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation.

General Statement of Duties:

Oversight of all financial, operational, and managerial aspects of the Norfolk SPCA’s shelter and clinic.

Responsible and Reports to:

The Board of Directors of the Norfolk SPCA

Primary Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Provides excellent leadership and vision to further the mission of the NSPCA. Develops and assists with the implementation of innovative means to maximize adoptions and pet retention.
  2. Works with senior management at the shelter to develop and implement programs to improve animal welfare in the Hampton Roads area.
  3. Works with the Board of Directors to develop annual and five-year strategic plans that include specific goals, timelines, and action steps.
  4. Prepares and presents an annual operating budget to the Finance Committee based on annual goals of the organization. Monitors the financial health of the organization regularly to ensure it operates in a fiscally responsible manner and within the limits of the operating budget, unless otherwise approved by the Board of Directors. Works with accounting employees and/or contractors to accurately record and track the NSPCA’s financial status.
  5. Oversees human resources matters to ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations. Assists the managers with recruiting, hiring, training, evaluating, and terminating employees. Ensures staff and volunteers are appropriately trained in animal care, animal behavior and handling, and assessment and treatment of animals. Conducts regular meetings with the general staff as well as the managerial staff. Ensures that the NSPCA staff and volunteers are trained in providing quality customer service and can accurately provide outreach and resource information to the community.
  6. In cooperation with the Board of Directors, develops written shelter operating guidelines and standard operating procedures. Establishes and enforces internal protocols to ensure best practices in terms of animal care, safety, and sanitation. Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  7. Maintains oversight of the shelter and clinical operations. Works in cooperation with the senior managers of these departments to ensure daily operations are following the NSPCA’s standard operating procedures.
  8. Coordinates with the development director to raise awareness of the mission of the NSPCA, and develop and maintain relationships with community businesses and organizations who support the NSPCA.Plans and assists with the implementation of programs to raise funds for the shelter. Strives to maintain and increase the NSPCA’s corporate and individual donor base.
  9. Serves as the chief spokesperson for the NSPCA to the media, local community, local/state/national government and humane society organizations. Attends meetings and seminars with these groups when appropriate to increase support and awareness for the NSPCA. Strives to strengthen the NSPCA’s image and positive reputation in the community. Creates and maintains meaningful alliances with other agencies and shelters to maximize adoptions, increase life-saving, and advance the humane treatment of all animals.
  10. Attends all Board of Directors meetings of the NSPCA as requested by the Board. Prepares a concise written report to be circulated prior to each Board meeting to update the Directors on the current state of the NSPCA. The report should include progress of long term goals as well as updates to any important situations occurring at the NSPCA. Works closely with the Executive Committee and President of the Board of Directors to ensure the mandates established by the Board are being implemented. Also attends meetings of the finance committee, clinic/shelter committee and development/marketing committee to assist with information and planning.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • At least five (5) years of management experience, preferably in a shelter, kennel, animal facility, or in a non-profit environment.
  • Strong fundraising and development experience.
  • At least five (5) years of experience in financial and personnel management; demonstrated skills to handle budget responsibilities and the organization’s day-to-day financial operations.
  • Ability to think strategically and plan for the long-term development and success of the organization.
  • Proven track record as an effective communicator; skilled in writing and speaking; ability to handle community and public relations communications.
  • Proven ability to manage, motivate, and train staff in a busy shelter/clinic environment; ability to manage stress and maintain professionalism in high pressure situations; must be a consummate team player.
  • Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule as the needs of the shelter may dictate, including on evenings and weekends as fundraising events or other situations may require.
  • Must enjoy working around animals; animal welfare experience is strongly preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record; proof of insurance.
  • Candidates must be willing to submit to a background check.
  • Bachelor’s degree required. A degree in business administration, accounting/finance or management and/or animal behavioral science is preferred.
