Objective:

Manyofmystudentshavetroublelisteningandwritingatthesametime.Theycan copy fromtheboardbuttakingnoteswhilelisteningisverydifficult.Myaimwastoincreasestudents’ abilitytowriteandlistensimultaneously.

Materials:

Worksheets,copiesofshortstoriesforActivity2,paperfordrawing

Procedure:

  1. Warmup:Studentsformpairsandplayjanken. Thewinnercomestothefrontoftheclass,wheretheALTshowsthemaverysimpledrawing(ahouse,ahappyface,atree,etc.) Thestudentsthencopytheimageandreturntotheirpartners.Thegoalisforstudentstotelltheirpartnershowtodrawthepicturewithoutshowingthemtheoriginal. (10minutes)
  2. Itellthestudentsashort storythatIhavewritten.(Mystoryisabouttravellingtothemoontogospace-bowlingwithBigBangandbeingattackedbyspace sharks. Anythinggoes.) IexplainthatIamtellingthestoryfrommemory,butIhavewritten10keywordsinmynotebooktohelpmeremember. WhileItellthestory,studentsshouldwritedownwhattheythinkisimportant. Afterwards,studentslookattheirnotesandworkwithpartnersorsmallgroupstodecideon10keywords. Onceeveryonehasdecidedon10wordsIsharemyoriginal10wordstoseeiftheyarethesame. (10minutes)
  3. Havestudentsformgroupsof4. Giveeachgroupmemberadifferentstory(moreadvancedstudentscouldwriteastorythemselves.) Itshouldtakenomorethan2minutestoread. Givestudentsafewminutestopracticereadingthestory,andthenhavethemshareitwiththeirgroup. Therestofthegroupmembersshouldtakenotesonthestory. Whenthestoryisfinished,everyoneinthegroupshouldwritea2-3sentencesummaryofthestory,basedontheirnotes. Repeatsothateveryoneinthegroupcanreadhis/herstory. (25-30minutes)
