SUBMITTALS

General: Submit the following in accordance with (Specifier: Insert appropriate reference to related sections here, ex. Conditions of Contract, Division 1, etc.)

  1. Product data in the form of manufacturer's product specifications, specific, detailed installation instructions and general recommendations for each type of expansion joint cover assembly indicated.
  2. Shop drawings showing full extent of expansion joint cover assemblies; include details indicating profiles of each type of expansion joint cover assembly, splice joints between sections, joinery with other types, special end conditions, fasteners, and relationship to adjoining work.

C.Samples for each joint cover assembly of same materials to be used in work.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Manufacturer's Instructions: In addition to requirements of these specifications, comply with manufacturer's instructions and recommendations for all phases of work, including preparation of substrate, applying materials, and protection of installed units.

B. Single-Source Responsibility: Obtain expansion joint cover assemblies from one source from a single manufacturer.

MATERIALS

For floor expansion joints capable of handling heavy-volume pedestrian traffic as well as a moderate volume of medium to heavy weight rolling utility equipment and vehicles, expansion joint system shall consist of the following components:

  1. Aluminum retainer legs with perforated mounting flanges
  2. Extruded, synthetic-rubber insert supported by inverted aluminum tee

Aluminum Retainers

The extruded aluminum retainers shall have a vertical leg and either a vertical or horizontal flange configuration to enable mounting to all joint conditions. Positive keying of successive lengths shall be achieved with stainless steel connecting pins or through interlocking the articulated rails of successive lengths.

Synthetic Rubber Insert

Extruded, flexible insert to made of high-quality, synthetic rubber extensively resistant to aggressive media including oils and acids. Temperature resistance of insert to meet or exceed –22 degrees F to 248 degrees F. Rubber insert to be support from underside by inverted, extruded, aluminum tee piece which will provide support to the center of the insert under point-loading.

EXECUTION

SURFACE CONDITION:

Joint surfaces to receive seal shall be sound, smooth, straight, parallel, clean, dry and free of all visible contaminants. Applications of non-visible coatings or contaminants to surfaces of joint interface area prior to installation of seal shall be controlled by the Architect/Engineer in consultation with the expansion joint manufacturer.

INSTALLATION

The following is a general summary of installation requirements. In all cases the manufacturer’s standard written instructions or specific instructions of a manufacturer’s technician are to be followed.

Fastening: Use anchoring devices and fasteners for securing expansion joint cover assemblies to in-place construction. Provide fasteners as supplied by expansion joint manufacturer.

System to be leveled into and embedded in 2-part hi-mod epoxy-gel setting-bed as supplied by expansion joint manufacturer.

Curing, Fitting and Placement: Perform all cutting, and fitting required for installation of expansion joint covers. If being installed in blockouts on each side of the joint-gap, the blockout depth shall equal the system leg height plus ¼-inch (6mm). The blockout width on each side of the joint-gap will vary with model being installed and with size of joint-gap (consult with manufacturer before casting or cutting blockouts).

Install joint cover assemblies in true alignment and proper relationship to expansion joints and adjoining finished surfaces measured from established lines and levels. Securely attach in place with all required accessories. Locate anchors at recommended intervals, and not less than 3 inches from each end.

Joinery and Continuity: Maintain continuity of expansion joint cover assemblies with end joints held to a minimum.

Blockout Backfill: The blockouts are to be filled flush to the floor and top surface of the expansion joint with a lo-modulus elastomeric concrete capable of handling expected loads.

(NOTE: If installing into floor where special floor covering is specified, joint system must be installed higher than the sub-floor level by an amount which will allow the flooring material to be installed flush to the finished surface of the joint system.)

CLEANING AND PROTECTION

Do not remove protective material until finish work in adjacent areas is complete. When protective material is removed, clean exposed metal surfaces to comply with manufacturer's instructions.

Remove all waste materials from the site. Do not use waste materials for patching unless so directed by the manufacturer. Seal shall be cleaned of all foreign matter as recommended by the seal manufacturer. Leave work in a condition satisfactory to the Architect/Engineer.
