ANNEX M1a

Manner of Cleansing and Disinfection of Breeding Houses

Contaminated with S.Enteritidis or S.Typhimurium

Every building or other place in this notice shall be cleansed and disinfected to the satisfaction of an inspector/veterinary inspector of the Ministry as follows: / c) all traces of organic material shall be removed from all internal surfaces of building(s) or other place(s) specified;
a) the whole of the interior of such building or other place, including the fittings, shall first be thoroughly saturated or sprayed with an approved disinfectant;
b) any droppings stored within the building shall be removed, under licence and
either
stored in a place specified in a notice (ZOS) until it can be spread under the conditions of a licence and ploughed into arable land immediately
or
moved under the conditions of a licence, spread and immediately ploughed into arable land
or
stacked at a place described in a notice (Z05), the outer surfaces of the stack sprayed with
approved disinfectant, the stack allowed to heat at least 7 days when the stack should be turned inside to middle, the outer surface to be sprayed and allowed to reheat for a further 7 days. / d)the floor of the building or other place and all other parts of the building(s) or other place(s) with which poultry or their droppings, eggs or any discharge may have come into contact shall be thoroughly scrubbed and scoured with water and then again be thoroughly saturated or sprayed with an approved disinfectant,
e)all litter, droppings (other than that subject in paragraph (b) above), eggs or similar things removed from the building(s) or other place(s), shall be thoroughly disinfected with an approved disinfectant or burnt or otherwise effectively destroyed;
f)any utensil, appliance or other similar thing that has been in contact with or used about, any poultry shall be disinfected with an approved disinfectant;
g)any vehicle(s) which has/have been used for the conveyance of poultry or the carcases of poultry, droppings, eggs, litter or similar things from the building(s) or other place(s) specified in this notice shall be cleansed and disinfected in a like manner and to the satisifaction of an inspector of the Ministry.
Which alternative method of disposal of droppings to be used will be agreed with a veterinary inspector at the time of this notice.

NOTES

An ‘approved disinfectant’ means a disinfectant approved for the purpose of the Diseases of Animals (Approved Disinfectants) Order 1978, as amended, for use in respect of the General Orders and at the stated dilution. Combination products comprising mixtures of formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde and quaternary ammonium compounds. Alternatively, 2-5% formalin solution can be used as long as appropriate safety precautions are taken.

2.Under the Zoonoses Order 1989 it is an offence if the owner or other person in charge of the poultry fails to cleanse and disinfect buildings, land, vehicles, or equipment as required by this Notice and in the manner prescribed. The Order further provides that if a person on whom this notice is served fails to comply with requirements, then an officer of the appropriate Minister may arrange for the necessary cleansing and disinfection and recover the costs from the person in default.
