Beginning Mandarin I SYLLABUS Ms. Lu Kuo

I. Course Content

Two Semesters, 1 Credit

This class is an introduction to Chinese language/culture, and designed for students who want to learn Chinese (Mandarin) as a foreign language. It will emphasize on building up student’s basic listening and speaking abilities as well as reading and writing in Chinese.

It will focuses on teaching the basic daily life conversations, combined with an

introduction to Chinese culture, custom, social, and business environment. The class will

provide students an enjoyable learning environment, and give them plenty of opportunities to practice the language in the classroom and expect to communicate well their knowledge in real life situations.

II. Student Classroom Behavioral Expectations

Students are not following the guidelines will be counseled and parents will be contacted. If students are still unable to conduct themselves in a professional manner, they may be barred from a work site temporarily or permanently. If a student is permanently barred from a work site, they may be dropped from the class, since they would be unable to complete assignments

Students are expected to:

  • Follow school rules and policies, such as dress codes & cell phone policy
  • Visible cell phones /any kind of MP3 will be confiscated
  • Be in their seats when the bell rings and begin the warm up immediately
  • Bring materials necessary for class, paper, pencil, pen, etc.
  • Listen quietly to whoever is talking
  • Use appropriate language
  • Treat the classroom and others respectfully
  • Take responsibility for their actions
  • Use class time wisely and stay on task
  • No food or drinks (other than water) are allowed
  • No apply make-up, cologne and comb hair elsewhere!

Possible Consequences:

  • ASD will be assigned for ALL unexcused tardy.
  • Parent contact
  • Removal from classroom
  • Referral to office

III. Student Assignments

Students are expected to:

  • Listen CAREFULLY to directions and follow them carefully.
  • Do their best on EVERY assignment
  • Hand in neat, legible assignments, on time.

Illegible or messy assignments will not be accepted.

  • Take responsibility for their learning and handouts of lessons.
  • Take responsibility for getting make up work the day they return, when absent.
  • Take responsibility for their portion of group assignments, be present with their materials or make sure their materials are sent to school if an absence is unavoidable. Groups not prepared on the day they are scheduled may not be given another opportunity to present.
  • Write the proper heading in the upper right hand corner of each assignment

3. Student ID plus 4. Mandarin Class Number

If the day’s assignment is not completed in class, it should be completed at home and ready to hand in when the student arrives to class or the assignment will be considered late. The same rule applies to homework assignments. If a book is necessary to complete the assignment, the student will need to make arrangements to use a book during the school day, or follow the check-out regulation in the class.

IV. Grades

All class assignments; tests, projects and class activities will be designed to assess state standards for foreign language of the High School level

Grading Scale:

A = 90% - 100%, B = 80% - 89%, C = 70% - 79%, D = 60% - 69%,

F = 59% and below

Evaluation and Assessments: Each and every effort counts!

Classroom performance: 25 %

Attendance, participation & team work(Speak ALL Mandarin PLEASE);

On task & contribute personal efforts to various activities;

Individual and group performances on daily basis.

Examinations and chapter quits: 50%

All kinds of writing and oral tests: including review/chapter examinations;

Dialog practice /role-play conversation and other assigned projects.

Home works: 25%:

Complete assigned homework and handout writing exercises;

Weekly free journal writing;

(Subject and length are free and you may draw, copy & paste and write in English or Chinese or mix both);

Weekly free reading/writing reflections; Cornell notes

Prefer Chinese-related books/articles, (Gradually write in Chinese ).

The grade system is based on semester grade. The quarter grades are carrying over instead starting over. Students and parents may check their grade on STI on a regular basis.
