Primary Objectives of Position /
  1. Manage and direct the activities of the Waverley Learning Commons (LC) including the provision of Information Literacy programs to students and staff of the Institute, to ensure that clients gain maximum use of services, information resources and physical facilities.
  1. Plan in consultation with the Manager, Learning Commons for the future development of the service at Waverley Campus to ensure that resources, staffing and IT support infrastructures are maintained and developed to effectively deliver the range of services required for the branch.
  1. Liaise with the Waverley Campus Manager, to ensure the physical facilities are maintained in their optimum state.
  1. Plan and co-ordinate, with the Manager, Learning Commons, the annual client feedback program for the Learning Commons.
  1. Co-ordinate the development, maintenance, review and implementation of the Collection Management policy, to ensure that the Learning Commons continues to meet the information resourcing needs of its clients.
  1. Provide advice, as a member of the LC Budget Committee, on the financial allocation of the Learning Commons’ Resources Budget.

Manager/Supervisor / Manager, Learning Commons
The Manager, Learning Commons is responsible for the co-ordination and provision of a range of information and resource services, the recruitment, selection, development and management of Learning Commons’ staff and the development and implementation of Learning Commons’ policy and procedure.
Role Of Subordinates (Where Applicable) / The position is responsible for the supervision of day to day activities of all staff working within the Learning Commons at the Waverley campus.
Internal Communication Requirements /
  • The Branch Manager, Waverley Campus communicates regularly with the Manager, Learning Commons, Branch Manager at Moorabbin and other Learning Commons’ staff.
  • The position must communicate regularly with the teaching staff at Waverley Campus in order to monitor and review the Learning Commons functions in line with current and future teaching program requirements.
  • The position must communicate regularly with the Technology Services Department and the Waverley Campus Manager to ensure IT infrastructure and physical facilities of the branch are kept in optimal operating condition.

External Communication Requirements /
  • The position is required to meet and communicate with staff in other libraries, business and community organisations and to serve on committees where appropriate, in order to monitor trends in the provision of Learning Commons’ services and new technology requirements.

Specific Accountabilities /
  1. Plan and monitor, in collaboration with the Manager, Learning Commons, client evaluation and feedback program for the Learning Commons.
  1. Assist the Manager Learning Commons in the planning and monitoring of the Learning Commons Waverley Campus annual budget.
  1. Provide dynamic day to day leadership to Waverley branch staff and actively encourage all staff at the branch to participate in the decision- making process to ensure a shared commitment to achieving Learning Commons’ objectives.
  1. Make recommendations to the Manager Learning Commons the professional development requirements of staff.
  1. Assess on a regular basis with the Electronic Resources Librarian, the Learning Commons’ print and electronic collection on its strengths and weaknesses in the light of educational programs provided by the Institute.
  1. Consult with the Electronic Resources Librarianand other Liaison Librarians to optimise strategies in terms of budget allocations for print and electronic resources.
  2. Act as a Liaison Librarian for one or more teaching faculties through direct ongoing liaison with staff in these faculties, in order to ensure that the faculties’ information needs are provided for efficiently and expediently.
  1. Prepare electronic and print-based Learning Commons’ publications to ensure that clients are fully informed of available services, resources and facilities within the network.
  1. Select and recommend resources for the collection and assess the Learning Commons collection to determine strengths and weaknesses in the light of the Institute’s educational programs and in accordance with the Collection Development policy.
  1. Develop and conduct Information Literacy sessions for new and returning students, to ensure that all students are educated in the most appropriate means of accessing, analysing and interpreting information.
  1. Undertake rostered Information and Lending Services Desk duties to facilitate access to information resources available in the Learning Commons.
  1. Act in accordance with Holmesglen’s safety policies and procedures to ensure the Department is compliant with OH&S legislation.
  1. Ensure the Department is compliant with Holmesglen's policy and procedure in relation to the Child Safety Standards.
  1. Ensure compliance with the requirements of the Holmesglen Management System, legislation and relevant external bodies.

Qualifications /
  • A degree in Library and Information Studies with eligibility for professional membership of ALIA.

Knowledge /
  • A working knowledge of the role of TAFE libraries and specifically information technology hardware and software provision within this environment.

Experience /
  • Experience and proven ability in the supervision, management and motivation of staff.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, together with the ability to operate with a significant degree of autonomy in dealing with supervisory issues relating to the operation of a busy library Branch.
  • Experience in the delivery of Information Literacy programs to Library clients.
  • Demonstrated experience in using the Internet and other electronic databases to access information for Library clients.

Skills /

Key Selection Criteria /
  1. A degree in Library and Information Studies with eligibility for professional membership of ALIA .

  1. Experience and proven ability in the supervision, management and motivation of staff.

  2. Demonstrated understanding of working within a budget.

Note /
  • The Incumbent may be required to perform his/her duties at any campus or location controlled by the Board or elsewhere as directed.
  • Rostered night and weekend shifts are an essential component of this position.
