Malpas Chess Club – Individual (Closed) Tournament 2009 – Format and Rules

General

Tournament entries should be made via the web site before 22nd July 2009. If you do not have access to the website please ask someone who does have access to complete the entry for you (using their e-mail address).

The tournament will begin with two groups of players; this will be an “all play all” stage. The size of each group will depend on the number of entries received. The draw for the Group stages will be made at The Three Horseshoes pub during the evening of Friday 24th July 2009. To facilitate the arrangement of group games a further draw will take place the same evening to determine for each the order of games to be played and deadline date. This information will be made available via the website. Failure to adhere to deadline dates may result in the disqualification from the competition of one or both parties by the tournament Arbiter (Gary Thomas). In any case, all group games must be completed by 31st August 2009.

Players finishing first and second in each group will progress to the tournament semi finals. The winner of each semi-final will progress to the final and the winner of that will be declared Malpas Chess Club champion 2009 and will get to keep the tournament trophy for one year.

Format

All matches during the group phases will consist of one Game only. If necessary, semi final and final matches will be decided by a quick play game and, if that is drawn, by sudden death blitz games until the match is decided, i.e. the first winner of a blitz game will be the match winner.

Colours

Colours for each Match including the first match in the semi finals and final are to be decided by the toss of a coin. Colours will be reversed during the semi final and final for each subsequent game in the event of a draw/draws resulting.

Match Scoring

During the Group phase one point will be awarded for a Game win, half point for a draw and no points for a defeat.

Pairing

The draw for the first group games will be made by under the supervision of the tournament Arbiter (Gary Thomas). The winner of Group A will play the runner up of Group B in one semi-final and the Winner of Group B will play the runner up of Group A in the other.

Match Venues

The venue of each match is to be arranged by mutual consent between the two players, e.g. upstairs or downstairs at the Three Horseshoes or at an individual’s home. NB If clocks are to be taken away from the Three Horseshoes this should first of all be cleared with Gary Thomas and/or David Williams. Also, if the upstairs room at the pub is required this should be booked in advance by contacting the bar staff at the pub.

Unfinished Matches

If any player is adjudged by the tournament Arbiter to have failed to make the necessary effort to complete all his Group matches his results for all matches completed will declared null and void.

Time controls.

Group/First Games. 35 moves each in a hour and a quarter each, with clocks being put back by 15 minutes (from the point reached) after 35 moves each and the game to be completed in the time remaining.

Quickplay game (if necessary). All moves in half an hour, i.e. half an hour on each clock.

Blitz games (if necessary). All moves in ten minutes, i.e. 10 minutes on each clock.

Match Timing.

All Group matches are to be completed by the end of August 2009. Both semi-finals are to be completed by 15th September 2009 and the final before the end of September 2009. Semi-final and final Matches should be completed during a single session unless both players agree to adjourn before commencing either a quickplay or a blitz match.

Tie Breaks

In the event of ties for either first or second place in the Group the higher Group placing will be awarded to the winner of the match between those two players. If that match was drawn the higher group placing will be awarded to the player that had the Black pieces in that match. In the event of a three way tie where the top two players cannot be identified using this method, the number of wins will first count and then results against the person finishing bottom of that Group will be eliminated from the scores of the top three.

Playing Rules

All games will be played according to FIDE rules (part form those already detailed) as interpreted by the tournament Arbiter

Disputes

If there is any dispute between the two players this should be brought to the attention of the tournament Arbiter as soon as possible and clocks should be stopped and times recorded where games have already commenced. The tournament Arbiter’s decision is final on all matters.
