“THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION AND THE CONTOURS OF
U.S. POLICY IN ASIA”

A.Aim of Seminar
The Malaysian Association for American Studies(MAAS), in cooperation with: The Centre for American Studies(KAMERA) in the Institute of Occidental Studies(IKON), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Bangi; Public Affairs Office, U.S. Embassy; and The Asia Foundation is organizing a half-day seminar to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the founding of MAAS on 4th June 1983. The seminar will focus on the new U.S. Administration led by President Obama when he takes office on 20th January 2009. What would be U.S. foreign priorities under the New Administration? How differently, if at all, would the policy-making process be managed, and what would be Obama’s impact on America’s conception and formulation of national security? What has been, and what would be the role of the media and public opinion in U.S. domestic politics and foreign policy? In what ways have Obama’s election impacted upon the global image of the United States? Finally, what can we expect from Obama’s foreign policy towards Asia/Southeast Asia/ASEAN, and how would the U.S. and Asia respond to the Global War on Terror, climate change, the global financial meltdown, and emerging prospects for genuine multilateralism in the Asia-Pacific region?
About 80-100 participants(local, regional, and international), including government officials, academics, diplomats, journalists, and MAAS members are expected to attend this half-day seminar. Details are as follows:
B.Tentative Programme (Wednesday, 3 December 2008: 8.30am – 2.00pm)
There will be2 panels, with a Keynote Address by the U.S. Ambassador to Malaysia, H.E. James R. Keith. Each Panel will comprise 1 Chairman, 2 Speakers(One American, One Malaysian), and 1 Discussant.

There is no Registration Fee. As such, participation in this seminar is based on a “FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED” basis.
