Teaching Biology in the Genomic Age: biotechnology, bioinformatics, and bioethics

Presented by Kevin Kruger, WestwoodHigh School

Friday, November 9, 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

NMU’s SeaborgCenter – West Science 2806

The SeaborgCenter will pay substitute costs for teachers in
Marquette & Alger Counties.

Enrollment is limited to a maximum of 24 teachers.
Preference will be given to middle & high school science teachers.

Cloning, stem cell research, gene therapy. We read about these controversial issues in the popular press almost weekly, and yet most of us have very little knowledge about the technology behind these topics. Today's studentslive in a world where biotechnology is becoming common place. The biotech revolution of this century is likely to dwarf the computer revolution of the last. Are our students being prepared for this future, both as a career path and as a citizen?

This workshop provides training and resources for middle school and high school teachers on how to incorporate biotechnology into the classroom. Both low tech and high tech lessons will be presented.

  • The first section of the workshop will cover the technology, such as extracting DNA from just about anything, including yourself!
  • The second major topic is called bioinformatics. Now that we know how to remove DNA from living things, what do we want to do with it?
  • Finally, we will look at bioethics. We’ll address the concern posed in the movieJurassicPark when Malcolm says "scientists were so busy seeing if they could, they didn't ask if they should."

State benchmarks are increasing adding biotechnology to the list of required subjects. This workshop will provide you with solutions to many them. No experience is necessary and you don't need to be a biology teacher to get some good ideas about DNA for your classroom.

I love teaching this subject and love sharing it with anybody who is interested in learning about it. So please join us on Nov. 9th for a look into the now! ~ Kevin Kruger ~
