Trust in the LORD

Proverbs 3:5-6

We are called to trust in a God we cannot see.
5Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6In all your ways acknowledge him,and he will make straight your paths.

13Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.

Text Message:

  • God whispers, “Trust:”
    *In our divine appointments,and ourdisappointments.
*In our break throughs, and our break downs.
    *In our rejoicing, and ourregrets.

*When our heart is full, and in our heartaches.

  • So, how do we trust in what we can’t see?
See every season in life as an opportunity to know God.
  • Circle the work “acknowledge” in Verse 6 above.
  • This Hebrew verb could be translated, “really get to know.”
  • It includes the ideas of experiencing God, intimacy, and the giving of oneself in a relationship.
  • The idea here is not to know God to get something else (like direction, wisdom, etc.), but that knowing God isfirst-priority.
  • A primary way we do this is reading and obeying God’s Word:

Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good, and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord. Proverbs 16:20

Isn’t it interesting that Jesus and all the apostolic writers of the New Testament said something about prayer?

Could it be that these writers knew that what was most foundational to faith is can also be the most forgotten?

Praise, whether spoken or sang, enables us to focus on what is right with God rather than what is wrong with us.

Scripture can be used to bring us into praise.

Be exalted, O Lord, in your strength! We will sing and praise your power. Psalm 21:13

Sing praises to the Lord, O you his saints, and give thanks to his holy name. Psalm 30:4

But I will hope continually and will praise you yet more and more.

5Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6In all your ways acknowledge him,and he will make straight your paths.

Text Message:

  • God will guide, but his guidance is given one-step-at-a-time.
  • Our nature is to want it all now, so we can know that it works out in the end.
  • This is where “trust” takes over. Circle the word in Verse 5.
  • The idea behind this word in Hebrew is putting your full weight upon something.
  • It’s as if the Psalmist is saying, “Put your full weight in the LORD, and not your own understanding.”
  • Now underline the promise in Verse 6.
  • Interestingly, the idea here refers to the removal of obstacles from the path to make travel possible and smooth.
  • Here the idea is of God making straight the path for someone, but the Bible also contains the reverse idea:
He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the wayof the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.” John 1:23

The idea here is that for one who has received Christ, the word is implanted into his/her spirit BUT that does not mean God’s Word has become a living priority in life!

The Word of God in our lives has movement:
First, the Word of God must be implanted.
Then, the Word of God must become important.
Finally, the Word of God must be implemented.

Notice how James seamlessly moves from healing from sickness to forgiveness.

He is not only thinking like a good Hebrew (Isaiah 1:5, 18-20), but following in Jesus’ footsteps (Mark 2:5).

Hearing God’s Word is not the destination, but a rest stop along the way!

Seven times in the Gospels Jesus says, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Text Message:

  • Simply said, this means that Proverbs 3:5-6 is not written to include God in my plans, but to include me in His plans!
  • God makes straight the path of one who is living for His glory.

Here instructions are given to live out the “deliver us from evil” part of the Lord’s Prayer.

Abstinence – What we don’t do that pleases God Has the Word been implanted into you? What importance does God’s Word have iIs it more like:
A vaccination (“Been there, done that…”)?

A booster shot (“I listen to the sermon most of the time”)?
A vitamin (“My day is off if I don’t’ read God’s Word”)?
