Reading strategy:summarizing

Key Visual:mind map

Language:vocabulary

Method:

To give the pupils the opportunity to talk about the text and the exercises, it is best to let them work in pairs or threes.

You can use the following videoto show the pupils the shoes:

(1:00 min)

(The video has as option to switch (English) subtitles on).

It is best to show the video afterthe pupilshaveread the text.

READ THE TEXT AND SUMMARIZE

First, the pupils predict what the text is about. You can open the text on the interactive whiteboard to look at the title, headings and the picture of the text.

Now read the explanationtogether with the pupils. Explain that summarizing is an important skill at school, not only in the English lessons. Model how you would use the reading strategy summarizing by thinking aloud. If you like you can use the following frame:

‘I read … the headings of the text one more time. Each heading tells me what this piece of text is about.

In the picture(s) I see that (a piece of) the text is about …

I know that important things are mentioned several times in a text / that I can ask questions to collect the most important information from the text.

So I think that the most important information of this text is ….’

Now the pupils are going to read the text. After reading a paragraph, theydiscusswhich sentence is the best summarizing sentence.

Finally, the pupils fill in the writing frame in order to make a summary of the text. Ask the pupils if the short text that emerges in the chart, forms a good summary of thetext. Maybe they want to add elements or linking sentences here or there. This is OK, provided the English is correct.

MAKE A MIND MAP

The pupils read the explanation about mind maps and how to compose one.

Subsequently, they make a mind map centered around ‘Ocean-plastic Shoes’, using relevant text elements. If the pupils know more about the subject, they can also add this information to the mind map.

ANSWER THE QUESTIONS

The pupils answer the questions about the text in pairs or threes. Encourage them to discuss their answers! You can find the correct answers on the next page.

MAKE AN ADVERT FOR PLASTIC SHOES

Explain to the pupils that when talking about a specific product in English, you often use adjectives. Write some adjectives on the whiteboard, that can be used when you talk about the new Adidas shoe. For example:

Adjectives that show an opinion: beautiful, stunning, cool, trendy, lovely, original…

Adjectives for colours: green, blue, yellow, gold…

Adjectives for material: plastic, polyester…

Hand out some blank sheets for the pupils to use for their advertisements. They can look for pictures of the shoes on the internet, for example from famous (sports)people wearing the shoes. They can also use coloured pencils etc. to make their advertisement more attractive.

If you like, you can hang the advertisements up in the classroom.

Trainers made from recycled materials from our oceans are new and trendy.
Plastic floating in the world’s oceans is a growing problem.
Adidas has found a smart way to turn a problem into a resource.
Adidas works together with Parley, an organization working to reduce plastic in our oceans.
There are 7,000 pairs of ocean-plastic trainers in stores and webshops and they cost €200.
Adidas wants to keep producing more products made from recycled materials.
