Maintenance HVAC Technician

Definition

Under general supervision, performs skilled work in the maintenance, construction, inspection, and repair of a wide variety of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems owned and operated by the school district.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions in this classification are distinguished from other maintenance classifications, in that the majority of assignments require the performance of journey-level skills in one of the trade fields such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, HVAC, or painting. Supervision of helpers may be a regular or occasional responsibility.

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience

  • Temperature and HVAC/refrigerated equipment maintenance and control, including solid state controls, adjustment and repair experience is a highly desirable qualification for the position.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the HVAC/refrigerant trade.
  • Applicable building/ electrical codes.
  • Estimating time and supply needs for specific jobs.

Ability to:

  • Perform skilled repair and maintenance work in the electrical trade.
  • Perform preventive maintenance duties.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Work effectively without close supervision.
  • Retain license from State of Oregon appropriate to the position for which applied.
  • Obtain Oregon State AHERA accreditation as an asbestos worker.

Licenses:

  • Possess and maintain an appropriate valid Oregon driver’s license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Possess and maintain a current Oregon State HVAC Technician License with EPA CFC Certification Card, or able to obtain and maintain the above.

Special Requirements

  • No beards or facial hair that will prevent the seal of type “C” respirator.
  • Employees must have facial features capable of fitting a type “C” respirator.
  • Employees must submit to and pass a pulmonary function test, a “B” read chest x-ray, cardiovascular fitness test and fill out a questionnaire on medical history and past work history dealing with asbestos.
  • Employee must be a non-smoker and sign a non-smoking agreement.
  • Employee must agree to periodic training schools dealing with asbestos control.
  • Employee must be able to lift 75 pounds.

Performance Responsibilities

Plans layouts, installs and repairs HVAC/refrigerant wiring, low voltage electricalfixtures, apparatus and control equipment. Plans new or modified installations.

Maintains consistency with specifications and state electrical/building codes.

Prepares sketches showing location of wiring and equipment or follows diagrams or blueprints prepared by others.

Measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble and install electrical conduit.

Installs HVAC/refrigerant apparatus such as switches, relays, thermostats, motorsetc.

Makes appropriate tests of HVAC controls and circuits to insure electrical compatibility and safety of all components using standard instruments, such as VOM, Megger, and oscilloscope.

Observes functioning of installed HVAC equipment or system to detect hazardsand need for adjustment, relocation or replacement.

Recovers and charges HVAC system and refrigerant system CFC’s IAW all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

Repairs, implements and performs HVAC/Refrigerant system preventative maintenance programs.

  • Fulfills other related duties as assumed or assigned.

  • Regularly required, in an 8-hour day, to sit for 5-8 hours; stand/walk/move around for 6-8 hours; drive 5-8 hours.
  • Regularly required to talk and hear.
  • Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, repetitive grasping and fine manipulation.
  • Lifting 75 pounds occasionally, and 50 pound regularly with frequent bending/squatting and occasional sitting or climbing stairs.
  • Frequently required to stand or walk (occasionally on an uneven surface), reach with hands and arms, stoop and/or bend.
  • Occasionally required to travel within the district, and infrequently travel outside the district.
  • Regularly required to climb ladders, work on high and/or steep surfaces, as well as under structures and below ground.

While performing the duties of the position, the employee works with various power and hand tools, portable and stationary.

The noise level in the work environment could be moderate to high. The employee’s work is frequently indoors, but often requires working in extreme temperatures including outdoors in various weather conditions. The work often requires standing outside for periods of time, and using ladders and other apparatus to access work at heights on uneven and/or slanted surfaces.
