PROGRAM/SERVICE DESCRIPTION

The Arts, Humanities & Adult Basic Education Division offers a wide assortment of traditional college transfer courses including Art, Drama, English, Intensive English, World Language, Humanities, Journalism, Music, Speech and Tutoring, as well as courses in English as a Second Language and pre-college level courses for native and non-native speakers (see Arts, Humanities & Adult Basic Education). Basic studies programs provide instruction for those who want to improve basic verbal and math skills or to earn a high school diploma in order to get better jobs, continue their education and improve their lives.
ADULT BASIC EDUCATION – Adult Basic Education courses, ABE 020, 021, 030, 031, 040 and 041, are equivalent to grades 1-8 in reading, writing, and arithmetic. These classes are designed for native speakers of English; program tuition is $25.00. Students must attend an ABE orientation session to take placement tests before registering for ABE classes.
GENERAL EDUCATION DIPLOMA – The GED test preparation classes, GED 050, 051, 060 and 061, are for students who have not completed high school. These classes help students prepare to pass the GED test. Completion of the five-part GED test earns a GED certificate accepted as equivalent to a high school diploma by most schools, colleges and employers. The GED test preparation courses are for residents and non-residents; program tuition is $25.00. Students must attend a GED orientation session to take placement tests before registering for GED classes. The GED test preparation classes are for students 19 years of age or older. GED classes are also offered for students 16-24 years of age; students interested in these classes should contact Belinda Tillman at 206-528-4517.
• ADULT HIGH SCHOOL COMPLETION – A high school diploma may be earned at North Campus. Adult High School classes are offered in English, History, Political Science, and Math. High school completion classes are scheduled in the evenings, to give adult students an opportunity to complete high school at hours that allow daytime jobs.
• ABE/ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE – Beginning English-as-a-Second-language classes ESL 010 through ESL 079 are offered to help Non-English speaking adults learn the basics of reading, writing, and speaking English. (They are referred to as ABE/ESL classes.) Citizenship classes, ESL 071 through 073, are also offered. Classes are for immigrants, refugees, eligible legalized aliens, and permanent resident cardholders; program tuition is $25.00. Placement tests should be taken in the Testing Center to determine the appropriate level of classes; students must also attend an ESL orientation before enrolling for classes.
The Advising Center helps students make academic choices to reach their educational goals. The center is open to all students on a walk-in or appointment basis. The advisors offer help with college transfer, professional and technical programs, business, English as a Second Language, GED and high school completion programs.

Advising provides advising and educational planning for students seeking college transfer degrees, professional technical advising for certificates and degrees in Business, Electronics and Information Technologies and ABE (Adult Basic Education), GED, ESL (English-as-a-Second-Language), and Adult High School Completion programs.

Advising staff provides advising and educational planning for students on both an appointment and drop-in basis. In addition Advising staff provides new student orientations, workshops on college transfer planning, and opportunities for students to meet with 4 year college transfer representatives.

PROGRAM/SERVICE DESCRIPTION

The ArtGalleryis one of Seattle’s premier art galleries and has been in existence since 1975. Itprovides the campus and the community with high quality visual arts. Six shows per year feature local and regional artists. The last show each year is the Annual Student Exhibition.
The ArtGalleryis funded and jointly operated by the Associated Student Body and the art faculty. The group’s purpose is to bring art works of educational interest to the campus. Art forms exhibited include painting, sculpture, drawing, ceramics, photography, jewelry, weaving and many other arts and crafts from both historic and contemporary sources. The ArtGallery regularly shows intellectually stimulating and visually exciting pieces created by Northwest artists. Exhibits change twice per quarter.

Classes include art history, design, drawing, painting in watercolor and oil and printmaking. We also teach sculpture, ceramics, computer art, digital photography and jewelry design.

Courses include: interpersonal, group, organizational and intercultural communication; media criticism, management, marketing and production; and in-person and media-based presentations. Our comprehensive curriculum offers the student a variety of choices and emphases in communication studies and professional applications for fulfilling the requirements of the Associate of Arts Degree or in completing our cross-disciplinary Associate of Applied Science-Transfer Degree or Certificate Program in Communication, Business and Media.

Classes include acting, directing, technical aspects of production and management, costuming, performance and dramatic theory and literature. Courses for both novice and experienced students are available. Guest artists add to the program offerings. Classes can apply to the AA degree and CFA certificate.

Classes include pre-college level English courses (numbered under 100) in grammar, reading, writing and study skills. Transfer English courses include Composition, Grammar, Creative Writing and a variety of Literature classes. Many of the Coordinated Studies offerings include an English component. Transfer classes (numbered over 100) can apply to the AA degree.

Humanities courses include Visual Thinking, Reading in Media, Gay and Lesbian Studies, Intercultural Communication, and popular on-line course – Introduction to Film. The Intro to Film may be taken over the Internet with no in-class meetings. Classes can apply to the AA degree.

The Loft Writing Center Plus’s mission is to enhance student skills in English and world languages through individual and small group tutoring in a positive environment. In addition, The Loft contains a multimedia language lab where students can work to improve their skills in English and world languages. Offers courses in music performance and theory in styles that range from Big Band Era jazz to classical music. Classes may apply to the AA degree, AFA degree, and CFA certificate. Music courses include Introduction to Music, Music History, History of Jazz, Introduction to World Music, theory and ear training, reading music, group and individual instruction in voice and piano and individual instruction in a broad range of instruments. Performance classes include: College Choir, Jazz Combo, Studio Jazz Orchestra, Contemporary Jazz Ensemble, Symphonic Band and small group performance.

North’s Information Technology program is the largest in the Pacific Northwest region and draws students from throughout Washington state and the world. Graduates of our programs are prepared to work in a wide variety of fields in Information Technology, including: Network Administration, Programming, Web Development, and Network Security. Our technology programs cover both current and well-established technologies.

The HVAC program provides system design training in heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration. The only one of its kind in the country available at a two-year college, North’s HVAC Program tailors your skills to employer needs and can aid you in getting your first internship or entry-level job in a rewarding, challenging career.

Electronics deals with electricity, electronic circuitry and software. The program at NSCC starts out with basic electricity, expands to integrated circuits and then electronic systems. Students attend this program from all over the world.

The Watch Technology Institute, with support from Rolex Watch U.S.A., is one of five Watchmakers of Switzerland Training and Education Program (WOSTEP) partnership programs in the United States. We offer a 3000-hour Basic Watch Repairer Training Course that will provide our students with a certificate in Watch Repair, preparation for the WOSTEP certification exams administered at the completion of the course, and job opportunities throughout the country. Recent graduates have received job offers with entry level annual salary ranging from $28,000 - $55,000 plus benefits. Over 90% of students that completed the course are working in the watch repair industry.
