Madison High School Course Selection 2018-2019

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Basic Information
  • There is a meeting for all 8th grade student/parents at 6pm on Monday, January 29th beginning at 6pm at Madison High School. This is where you will be able to learn about different class and elective options for students 9th grade year.
  • Fill your Course Selection Sheet out in PENCIL, please.
  • All Course Selection Sheets are due Friday, February 2, 2018 to the students 8th grade English teacher
  • If you planning to go to another high school (Magnet program, transfer, etc…) you will still fill out a Madison Course Selection Sheet until the paperwork to go to the other school is completed and approved.
  • If you want to change what you selected on your Course Selection Sheet, you can do this in May. A sheet that lists the classes you signed up for will be mailed home in May. Once you get this, you can request changes and send it to Madison to be switched, pending available space.
  • Elective Class questions
  • If you were in Spanish I this year, you need to sign up for Spanish II in 9th grade. You will not want to skip a year.
  • Although difficult, it is not impossible to do band and a sport or cheer/dance and a sport. There will be UIL and competition conflicts that need to be approved by the sponsor or coach. If you do both of these all 4 years, it will be difficult to get all of the required classes for graduation in without going to summer school.
  • There are some classes that require tryouts to be enrolled (AVID, Cheerleading, Dollies, etc…) and you CANNOT put this class on your choice sheet. What you can do is write a note at the top or bottom of the Course Selection Sheet that says something like “If I am accepted into AVID, please drop ______” or “If I make Cheerleading, drop PE”.
  • Successful completion of ROTC will earn 1.0 Elective and 1.0 PE credit
  • Band
  • 1 Year in Band will earn a student 1.0 Fine Arts Credit and 1.0 PE credit.
  • Fine Arts classes
  • 1.0 credit of a Fine Arts class is required for graduation and it is recommended that students take this in 9th grade.
  • Sports
  • High School does not have an “Athletics” period as middle school did. Most of the sports that you play are in their own class period. Football has a class period, volleyball a class period, etc… You would sign up for football or volleyball, not athletics.
  • You will sign up for the 1st sport in the season that you want to play and put this sport on your choice sheet for the whole year. For example, if I want to play football and basketball, I am ONLY going to write football on my choice sheet. Once school starts and football is over, the coaches will switch my schedule for me if I need to be in the basketball class.
  • A current Harris coach’s signature is required on the choice sheet for any sports as these are competitive teams. The Harris coach will simply sign their signature beside the sport you want to sign up for on the choice sheet.
  • Boys Baseball (9th grade) does not have a class period. Contact Coach Wehe at with any questions.
  • Boys Track (9th grade) also does not have a class period. Contact Coach Flores at with any questions.
