Drs. Huepenbecker and Isensee discussed the scope of the obesity epidemic in the U.S. and the impact of obesity on patients, their families, and society. They also discussed the economic impact of obesity on a personal level and on the nation’s health care system. The causes and physiology of obesity, along with the complications, were presented. Dr. Isensee presented medical options for treatment of obesity including diet, drug treatment, exercise and behavior modification. Dr. Huepenbecker presented surgical options for treatment of obesity including laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, gastric bypass, and sleeve gastrectomy. Both physicians emphasized the need for a team approach to managing this chronic disease. The presentation was well received and generated many questions and comments from the audience.
Business Meeting / Conducted by Claudia Yoakum-Watson, Vice President
Claudia Yoakum-Watson distributed and discussed information about the MAC-AAPC officer roles and responsibilities. She encouraged members to nominate themselves or someone else to run for an officer position in the October election.
Members were encouraged to complete the MAC-AAPC survey; a link to the survey is on the MAC-AAPC website. Survey deadline is June 15. The first 200 respondents will be eligible for a drawing for $100; the drawing will take place at the June 20 officers’ meeting. The survey results will be used to guide MAC-AAPC Chapter activities in the next year.
Loretta Brunell announced that there are still some CPC Exam Study Guides available for purchase at $65. For more information, please see the MAC-AAPC website.
The next chapter meeting will be held on July 12, 2012 at 9:00 AM. Steve Leurquin is a Leadership Consultantwho will provide instruction on various topics related to helping people live the lives they always wanted through self-improvement. This will be an interactive presentation where Mr. Leurquin and his assistants will administer a self-assessment test and provide feedback as a result of the scores on the assessment. They will also teach introductory lessons on the steps people can take to improve themselves in a variety of areas.
The answer to June’s Coding Challenge Question was reviewed. A drawing for door prizes concluded the meeting.
