Calculus & It’s Applications, 12th Edition, by Goldstein, Lay, et al

Course Description:

Introduction to calculus with an emphasis on problem solving and applications. Key concepts are presented graphically, numerically and algebraically. The course covers: algebraic, exponential and logarithmic functions, their properties and their use in modeling; the concepts of derivative and definite integral and their applications.

The Derivative, sections 1.1 - 1.3, 1.6 – 1.8

Applications of the Derivative, sections 2.1 – 2.7

Product Rule / Quotient Rule / Chain Rule, sections 3.1 - 3.2

The Exponential and Logarithmic Functions, sections 4.1 – 4.6

Applications of the Expo. And Log Functions, sections 5.1 – 5.3

The Definite Integral, sections 6.1-6.5

Final grade = 70% of test average plus 30% of final exam.

Calculator Policy: Students must have a TI-89 or a TI-83 + graphing calculator and bring it to every class session. If you plan to go on to a higher math course, a TI-89 is the best choice. The TI-83 plus may be purchased on E-bay for around $40.

Make-Up Policy:

Makeup tests will be left up to the instructor. Usually, if a test is missed, the Final Exam grade will be substituted for the missed test. You will receive a grade of zero on your second missed test.

Attendance Policy: Attendance insures that you get notes which will help you learn the material being covered and allows you to learn from questions being asked and answered in class. Leaving early and arriving late count as a ½ class period absence. Three or more absences could result in a lower or even failing grade.
