LUCY Picture Scavenger Hunt

“Detroit Past, Present, and Future”

Notes:PLEASE READ ALL THE NOTES BEFORE YOU BEGIN. Each numbered area requires pictures to show that your team was in the area. The driving is estimated to take 2 hours and 8 minutes (without counting getting confused with directions, or walking around). I expect you to take 4 hours total on this project. It is more important that you see all four sites rather than spending all of your time in one location. If you happen to take any human pictures, please ask before you take the picture.

1)The first site is at the Ford Rouge Plant (Miller Rd & Gate 6 Acc Dearborn, MI 48120). You cannot go into the plant, as entrance is restricted. I want you to find the overpass where “The Battle of the Overpass” occurred. There is a plaque there, as well as a pedestrian overpass over Miller Road. I’d also like you to go a bit further down Miller Road towards Dix Rd (but not all the way), and take a look to see if the foundry’s furnaces are on. If they are, those make a great picture. If not, then the overpass and the plaque/statue will do just fine. More on the Battle of the Overpass can be found at:

2)Next is Pastor Garza’s First Spanish Baptist Church (3495 Livernois Ave Detroit, MI 48210). It is a block or two away from Logan ES, so feel free to park near the school if you wish and walk to the Church, or to pass by the school and take pictures for the poster session. Regardless, I’d like you to stop by the church and take a picture there.

3)The third place is the Fisher Building (3011 W Grand Blvd Detroit, MI 48202) on the corner of Grand Blvd and Woodward, two of the main streets in Detroit. The Fisher Building was designed by Albert Kahn, who was often referred to as “the architect of Detroit” and who designed many notable buildings at the University of Michigan; including Couzens Hall and the Bell Tower. The Fisher Building was a monument to the great power and wealth that Detroit when it was called “the Paris of the West” (and in its owners, the Fisher Brothers). If the building is open, feel free to walk inside. If not, walk around the area and take some pictures. This area is called “the New Center” area, and is not far from UPA.

4) Last, and most important, is the Heidelberg Project (3750 Heidelberg St Detroit, MI 48207). Please park down the block without blocking any traffic or entrances on Heidelberg near Ellery Street as this is a residential area and residents need to conduct their daily lives. If you are lucky, you’ll get to talk to the artist or the kids who’ve collaborated on much of the art. Looking at the art is free, but they do ask for donations if you can spare any.

Call Rodolfo Palma at 734 218-4474 if you encounter any problems or have any questions.
