Job Purpose and Accountability:

Teachers receiving Teaching and Learning Responsibility Payments provide professional leadership and management for their school/subject area(s) to secure high quality teaching, effective use of resources and improved standards of learning and achievement for all pupils. (Ref Teacher’s Standards 2012). They are accountable for a significant, specified responsibility focused on teaching and learning, that is not required of all classroom teachers. (Ref STRB/RIG)

Your immediate responsibility is to:

  1. You are to carry out the duties of a school teacher as set out in Pay and Conditions Document 1994 and subject to any amendments due to government legislation. This includes any duties as may be reasonably directed by the Headteacher.
  1. All staff are expected to uphold the school’s principles which underpin good practice and the raising of standards.
  1. Prepare and teach lessons of a high standard to the children assigned to him/her:

a)Following designed programmes of study

b)Carrying out the necessary assessments

c)Providing information/comments for records

d)Monitoring students in accordance with agreed school policies

  1. Maintain discipline in accordance with school policies and demonstrate good practice in the classes taught with regard to attendance, appearance, uniform, punctuality, behaviour, homework etc.
  1. Contribute to the corporate tasks of development, record keeping, monitoring, and evaluation of lessons and maintenance of materials.
  1. Participate in the applications of the school homework policy which includes setting, marking of homework and monitoring homework diaries.
  1. Work closely with and consult those teachers who are also responsible for similar curriculum.
  1. Engage in continuous self-professional development in relevant areas.
  1. To cover the school in the event of Headteacher absent in the short term.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Principles and practices of effective teaching and learning
  • Preparation of schemes of work and lessons

  • Principles and practices of monitoring/assessment/evaluation
  • The application of information and communications technology (ICT) to learning and teaching subject areas

  • Demonstrate a thorough awareness and up to date knowledge of the teaching of your subject and take account of wider curriculum developments which are relevant to your work

Teacher Assessment

  • Demonstrate that you consistently and effectively plan lessons and sequences of lessons to meet pupils’ individual learning needs
  • Demonstrate that you consistently and effectively use a range of appropriate strategies for teaching and classroom management and, at UPS2 level:with the majority of your lessons at least “good” in OFSTED terms
  • Demonstratethat you consistently and effectively use information about prior attainment to set well grounded expectations for pupils and monitor progress to give clear and constructive feedback

And at UPS3 level:

  • Make a distinctive contribution to raising pupil standards

Pupil Progress:

  • Demonstrate that, as a result of your teaching, your pupils achieve well relative to the pupils’ prior attainment, making progress as good or better (at UPS2 level “better”) than similar pupils nationally. (This should be shown in marks or grades in any relevant national tests or examinations, or school-based assessments for pupils where national tests are not taken.)

Wider professional effectiveness:

  • Take responsibility for your professional development and use the outcomes to improve your teaching and pupil’s learning
  • Make an active contribution to the policies and aspirations of the school
  • And at UPS2 level: seek to share your expertise with colleagues
  • And at UPS3 level:

Accountability for leading, managing and developing your subjects, curriculum areas and pupils development across the curriculum:

  • To ensure the Key Stage or subject areas are well organised and resourced
  • To monitor teaching and learning in Key Stage and subject areas and report to appropriate bodies
  • Maintain up to date knowledge within Key Stage/Subject areas by research, reading and collaboration with other schools etc
  • To be responsible for a Zero Based budget, which identifies subject needs and wishes and prioritise spending within a time frame.

Specific Duties for

  • To ensure the subject area is well organised and resourced
  • To monitor subject planning and coverage
  • To monitor teaching and learning in the subject and to report to appropriate bodies
  • Maintain up to date knowledge in subject area by research, reading and collaboration
  • To develop a subject action plan
  • To actively promote your subjects
