You and your squad are invited to attend the Northwest Forensics Conference Spring Fling Tournament held on Friday –Saturday,April 28 and 29, 2017 atColumbia Basin College.

Some features and special rules of this tournament are:

1. This tournament will be open to both community colleges and four year schools.

2. Entry is limited to 5 students or teams per school per event,

3. Students may double enter, but not triple enter.

4. As host school, CBC students will be eligible for awards.

5. There will be overall sweepstakes for the top three schools at each level.

6. The tournament will follow the rules/guidelines/constitutions of the NWFC, NIET-AFA and IPDA. In case of a conflict in these rules, decisions will be determined by the attending schools’ directors of forensics or their designated representative meeting as a committee of the whole.

7.The entire tournament will be held in the Social Science and World Languages building. This is the new

building to the left of the roundabout on the north side of campus.

8.Register at Registration will close Tuesday, April 25th, at 5:00pm.

For driving directions and maps go to The main entrance to CBCis on the north. The entire tournament will be held in the SWL building. Parking will be available in the parking east of the building. On Friday, parking must be in spaces with white lines only; yellow lines indicate reserved parking all day and evening.

DIVISIONS: We will be offering both Open and Novice divisions in both IEs and IPDA, but will collapse if necessary.

AWARDS: Medals will be presented to the first, second, and third place speakers in each individual event. There will be certificates for Finalist in IE’s. Medals will be awarded to all debaters who advance to elimination rounds. Speaker awards will be given as appropriate. There will be overall sweepstakes for the top three schools.CBC will compete for all awards. Guest coaches will assist in the tab room

ENTRY RESTRICTIONS: Students may double enter. They do so at their own risk. They may NOT triple enter.Students may not enter the same event twice. Each school is limited to 5 entrants per individual event.

JUDGES: Please make every effort to cover your entry; our judging pool is small. A debate judge covers 2 IPDA debaters. We reserve the right to double flight IPDA. An IE judge covers 6 IE entries. If you have qualified judges you can bring beyond your entry, please let us know in advance. We may be able to hire them. We will assume that your judges will be available at the point in the tournament where your students start competition—for example if you have no students in pattern A we will not schedule you for pattern A preliminary rounds. However, once your students start competition, we expect you will be available to meet your IE and/or debate judging commitment. Of course judges are committed at least one round beyond the point where their students are eliminated.

HOUSING: Attached you will find a motel list.

MEALS: CBCfood service will only be open Friday until 1:00. We will provide cateredboxed luncheson Saturday, so an early estimate of the number of students and coaches you are bringing is requested.

FEES: School = $40.00, IPDA entries 20.00, each, IE entry = $8.00. IE’s not covered are charged $12.00 per IE slot, IPDA debaters not covered by a judge $50.00. Fees will be set at 12 noon, Wednesday before the tournament. Cash or check please. You can make checks payable to Columbia Basin College.

CRITIQUES, WARM ROOM AND DISCLOSURE POLICIES: We will not have a warm room, will not post results after each round, oral critiques are allowed but only after the ballot has been turned in and no disclosure allowed.

GENERAL RULES: All materials used in competition shall not have been used by the student in interscholastic competition prior to September 1, 2016. A contestant may not use the same cutting/content or any portion of that cutting/content in more than one prepared event at this tournament. Out round brackets in debate will be broken to avoid debaters from the same school meeting. All interp events require a manuscript. All oral critiques and discussions should occur after the ballot is turned in. Individuals must be prepared to debate on time.

IPDA Debate: One-on-One debate similar to Lincoln-Douglas format. Time limits: 5 aff const.-2 +X,-6Neg Cons-2+X-3 aff rebuttal-5 Neg rebuttal -3aff rebuttal. There will be a central topic announcement with a five topic strike. 30 minutes preparation time. We will attempt to use lay or even student judges for some of the rounds. We will try to make sure that each debater faces the same number of lay judges.For more information on IPDA, see: IPDAdebate.org—Please have your judges review this information. It is assumed that the judges you provide will be supportive of the philosophy and goals of this event.

Registration/common area/prep area: Registration and tab room will be SWL 202. Ballot return and pick-up area will be outside of tab (SWL 202). IPDA topic will be in SWL 121; and extemp draw will be in SWL 221. The Coaches’/ Judges’ lounge will be in SWL 102.
