Admissions No. 58 / Enrolment No. 406

Lough View was opened in September 1993 on a magnificent site overlooking the city. The school has grown rapidly to two-form entry and 14 classrooms. The school building is large, spacious and well resourced, while our extensive grounds support a range of outdoor learning opportunities.

As an integrated school, we welcome children from both main Christian traditions, as well as children from other world religions, and children with no religious affiliation. Through an ethos, which respects diversity, we aim to provide an atmosphere of acceptance, mutual respect and understanding for all our children, whatever their religious, cultural or social background. Our approach to the teaching of R.E. is reflective of this ethos.

In addition, the school provides separate preparation for Catholic children whose parents wish them to be prepared for the sacraments.

Our children come from East, South and South East Belfast and beyond, helping us to achieve one of our aims, that of making the school available to as wide a catchment area as possible.

Learning at Lough View is child-centred and we aim to enable every child to fulfil his/her potential. Accordingly we provide a curriculum which is active, enjoyable and stimulating.

Outside of the curriculum our pupils have many opportunities to develop their creative, expressive and sporting skills and interests through an extensive array of after school clubs and activities. These include choir, soccer, judo, tennis and art etc.

The school also provides opportunities for pupils to sing, learn to play musical instruments and represent the school in a range of sports.

Lough View is a health promoting school and encourages pupils to eat well and exercise regularly.

As a school which was originally founded by parents, Lough View is committed to a real and meaningful partnership between home and school. To this end the school provides many opportunities for parents to engage with the staff, governors and other parents to support the learning of their children and the wider development of the school. We have an active Parents’ Council (PTA) and our Board of Governors includes six parent representatives.

Admissions criteria are drawn up by the Board of Governors, including the Principal. The task of applying the criteria is delegated to an Admissions Committee, consisting of the Principal and three Governors, subject to the final approval of the Board of Governors.

Admissions Criteria

As an integrated primary school, a key purpose of the school is to educate together children of different religious traditions. Parents can find out more about the integrated ethos of the school in the 'Statement of Principles' for Integrated Education, which is available from the school.

In applying the admissions criteria the Board of Governors will strive to ensure a balance of 40% Catholic, 40% Protestant and 20% other world religions and children of no religious affiliation throughout the school. In the event of admissions being over-subscribed, the following criteria will be applied in the order listed below:

Year 1 Intake

1Children transferring from Lough View Integrated Nursery Unit.

2Children of compulsory school age with a sister or brother, half-sister/half-brother, step-brother/step-sister already enrolled at the school.

3Children of compulsory school age who are siblings of pupils formerly enrolled at the school.

4Children of compulsory school age whose parent(s)/guardian(s) are presently permanent members of the school staff or are due to take up a permanent staff post in the next academic year or are serving members of the Board of Governors.

5Children who applied to Lough View Integrated Nursery as their first choice on or before the closing date for applications but were unable to gain a place due to oversubscription.

6. Children of compulsory school age who are the only or eldest in their family eligible for admission.

6Children of compulsory school age who are the eldest child (since September 1993) in their family eligible for admission.

7All other children of compulsory school age.

In the event of over-subscription in the last criterion, which can be applied, the selection for places remaining in this last category will be on the basis of the initial letter of the surname in the order set out below. The surname used will be as registered on the birth certificate or as subsequently legally changed and documented.

M L E A F G D B W R V Y I U K C Q P S X O N J Z

The order was determined by a randomised selection of letters of the alphabet.

In the event of surnames beginning with the same letter, the subsequent letters of the surname will be used in alphabetical order. In the event of 2 identical surnames thealphabetical order of the initial letter of the first forename, as registered on the birth certificate, will be used. In the event of first forenames beginning with the same letter the subsequent letters of the forename will be used.

Criteria as above.

Y2-Y7 Intake

IMPORTANT NOTES

It is the parent’s responsibility to ensure that all information which is relevant to the admission criteria is included on the statutory application form. Recording your child’s perceived religious tradition is particularly important.

Where parents fail to state their child’s religious tradition, their application will be allocated to the category with most applicants in that particular year.

In accordance with the 1997 Education Northern Ireland Order (Section 16:4), Lough View School has been directed to select for admission all children resident in Northern Ireland at the time of their proposed admission to school before any child not so resident may be selected for admission.
