An overview of various second level drawing techniques concentration on media applications.

Prerequisites: Art 201, Art 501

Instructional Process/Class Procedures:

This is a lecture-lab course based on the second level development of drawing projects. Attendance is required and recorded at the beginning of each session. You must bring your materials to class and be set up and ready to work promptly. Attendance at class critiques is compulsory. Students are responsible for the materials covered in lectures and for work assigned, both in and out of class. They are expected to take good notes and put in the required amount of time it takes to practice the skill of advanced drawing. Please get the number of another student so that any missed course materials can be obtained. Los Angeles Valley College Art Department, under the accreditation rules of the State of California, requires that all assignments in studio courses be handed in on the due date at the beginning of the class in order to receive credit. No late work is accepted under any circumstances unless a doctor’s letterhead note for illness, or a bereavement form for family death is provided for documentation. Participation in critiques, discussions and lab time is required and will be assessed as part of a student’s grade. All work must be presented for critique at the beginning of the pin-up/class to receive credit. It is the responsibility of the student to meet all deadlines in order to earn project grades.Valley College reserves the right toretain/archive and displayassignments.

No eating or smoking is allowed in the classroom at any time. No toxic materials may be used in the class. No electronics or phones allowed. Please refrain from talking during lectures. Please check to make sure the room is left in good order when leaving. Clean up is a responsibility for every student. Vandalism or graffiti will not be tolerated. Handouts will be distributed as assignment guides. They will contain exercises, concepts and terms that will be covered in class. Each student is responsible for his or her own materials. Please label them with your name. Get the contact information of another student.

Exclusion:

The instructor reserves the right to exclude students from the course due to excessive absences as detailed in the College schedule and catalogue under "Attendance Regulation." Any student who has unexcused absences totaling four or more hours of classroom time is subject to exclusion; al excused absences must be cleared with the instructor. IF YOU DECIDE THAT YOU NO LONGER WISH TO ATTEND THE COURSE, HOWEVER, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO DROP OR WITHDRAW. Behavior, which is disruptive to the class, such as chronic talking during lectures, may also be grounds for exclusion.

Grading:

Grades are earned by the students from the average of grades received on assignments, artist notebooks, museum critique, research, written assignments, class attendance and participation. Consideration is given for effort and improvement. Assignments must be handed in on time to receive a grade. NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS ACCEPTED.

Valley College SLO ART 202

Students will construct a series of second level exercises and drawing projectswith varied media applications such as charcoal, ink, pastel, collage, etc. Students will mix colors, organize compositions and choose papers appropriate for second level media. A rubric will be used to assess their ability to recognize and choose appropriate materials, build compositions, mix colors and apply drawing effects in order to makes successful second level drawings.

Students will verbally articulate and visually demonstrate the process of constructing drawings and using art vocabulary they will discuss the process and conditions of artworks made by other artists. A rubric will be used to assess their ability to formulate conclusions about the skills, designs and subjects used in drawings

Museum Review Form

All students are required to attend an exhibition or take a gallery visit and engage an artwork related to class or an assignment. This must be typed.

  1. Attach the ticket.
  2. Document the date, place, exhibit.
  3. Pick a specific artwork related to class.
  4. Write a short background paragraph.
  5. Write a short subjective analysis (related to class.)
  6. Ask the artist a question (don’t answer it.)
  7. Construct a simile, association, etc.
  8. Draw a quick thumbnail.

PORTFOLIO:

All work must be photographed and presented in portfolios.

ART STATEMENTS

All students must provide an art statement.

PRESENTATIONS:

To receive a grade the picture must be up for critique. Everyopne is required to verbally participate.

All levels of students must adhere to craftsmanship and presentation quaility; presentation and craftsmanship are part of the grade.

-Construct personal objectives for drawings

-Employ drawing techniques to communicate personal ideas.

-To find contextual areas for ideas in culture, music, history, literature, humanities, etc.

Art 202 Materials - WRITE YOUR NAME ON EVERYTHING!

Materials and Supplies

1 sketchbook

4 graphite pencils, one each in the designations 6B, 4B, 2B, HB (Note: these are not charcoal pencils)

1 utility knife

1 metal-edged ruler (if you are buying one, get an all metal one with a cork or rubber back at least 24" long)

1 drawing board (at least 20" x 26" - a simple piece of Masonite will do.)

1 tote box for your tools & supplies

1 pocket pencil sharpener (Good quality)

A pad of moderately heavy weight white opaque drawing paper at least 18 x 24" (E.g., Strathmore 400 Drawing or something comparable)

push pins/clips for hanging

1 small roll of art tape or drafting tape (Do not get masking tape)

decorative and color tape to be announced

1 portfolio envelope (24" x 30")

1 vinyl plastic eraser (this is a soft eraser that does not tear or leave smudges on paper)

ADDITIONAL MATERIALS FOR SPECIFIC ASSIGNMENTS

1 or more tortillons and/or stumps

Fine sandpaper or sandpaper pencil pointer

1 black marker pen

1 set color pencils (Prisma)

1 kneaded eraser

cutting tools

glue stick

PUSH PINS for presentation

Permanent fixative spray (No spraying in class)

At least 6 sheets of color charcoal/pastel paper (Canson is the recommended brand. Do not confuse these with construction paper.

At least one each of the following Conté Carré sticks: soft black, sepia (they are usually sold in blister packs of two). Rembrandt makes a set of sticks that might be cheaper & more versatile in the long run.

Charcoal in stick, vine, block form

1 box of at least 24 assorted Prisma soft chalk block pastels (not pencils)

Black/color ink (other wet media later)

Japanese ink brush or other WC brush

Assorted still-life materials that may be requested (E.g. dried chicken or other poultry bones, phone wire or other wire and junk, plants etc. )

Various materials as needed.

Old clothes or an apron.

Presentation materials: Mats (white/gray/black)
