Lord of the Flies Mrs. Livaudais

Stranded!

You and the members of your group are stranded on an island. There is no one else

on the island to help you. Your survival is entirely dependent on you and the members

of your group. While there is no sign that you will be rescued on the immediate

future, there is a chance that a plane or ship may pass the island eventually.

Part I.

As a group, you need to supply the following information:

  1. Give your island a name.
  2. Make a list of at least five (5) things you must do in order to survive.
  3. Organize that list in order of priorities.
  4. Assign tasks to members so that the things on your list will be accomplished by specific people. Try to assign tasks based on skills or aptitude.
  5. Keeping your priorities in mind, make a list of three (3) rules that everyone must obey.

Part II.

Each group member is assigned a part of the island to explore. Each person must describe his or her part of the island in detail in a written paragraph. The island section assignments are as follows:

  1. You have the north end of the island to explore. It is treacherous and rocky. There appear to be caves in the rocks.
  2. You have the south end of the island to explore. There is a fruit orchard.
  3. You have the west end of the island to explore. There is a clearing and protection from the ocean.
  4. You have the east end of the island to explore. There is a mountain which overlooks the island.
  5. You have the center of the island to explore. There are some animals nesting in the middle of the island.

Helpful insight: The above descriptions are vague on purpose, meaning you must use your imagination in order to create your island. First brainstorm what it looks like and illustrate it, then describe that picture in writing. If you have fewer than 5 members in your group, eliminate the east end from the section assignments.

After the members have written their paragraphs, the groups should answer the following questions about each section of the island.

  1. How can the group use this section?
  2. What can be used in this section for rescue?
  3. What dangers lurk in this section?

Part III

Each group should now draw a map of their island. The map should show exactly where you will set up shelters, where you will gather or hunt for food, where you will bathe, and what parts of the island you intend to avoid. The map should also reflect your descriptive paragraphs written about the various sections of the island, and it (the map) should therefore include an indication of direction (north, south, east, west).

The final product should include:

  • List of group members
  • Name of the island
  • List of five things you must do to survive (in order of appearance)
  • Which group members will perform which tasks
  • List of three rules
  • Five descriptive paragraphs (uses and dangers) answered afterwards
  • Map
