BILINGUAL/ESL PROGRAM BENEFITS

IMPORTANT: Campuses are required by law to explain the program benefits to parents. Texas law provides two programs, Bilingual Education and English as a Second Language (ESL), for children who speak a language other than English and who may have difficulty with all English school work. Both programs include advantages which should be noted.

  1. Bilingual Education is provided at grades PK-5. Our goal is to help your child learn English easily and effectively. The benefits of the program are:
  • Students are given ample time to learn English.
  • Academic success is provided through a curriculum tailored to students’ needs and abilities.
  • Students learn reading and writing as well as math, science, and social studies in both English and the home language of the child.
  • Students are provided with textbooks and teaching materials in their native language,
  • The program promotes the development of a positive self-concept.
  • Students are afforded opportunities to learn more about their culture.
  • Parents are able to help their children in their native language.
  • Parents are able to interact with school personnel.
  1. English as a Second Language (ESL) is provided at grades PK-5 where bilingual education can not be provided and in grades 6-12 at all secondary campuses. The benefits of the program are:
  • Students in ESL classes learn to effectively listen, speak, read and write in English in order to achieve success in school.
  • Students’ learning is facilitated by the adaptation of materials and instruction.
  • Students receive instruction from certified teachers who have been trained to meet the students special language needs.
