London College of Beauty Therapy (LCBT) is the leading specialist college for beauty and related industries. Founded in 1995, the college is now the largest in the UK delivering approx 30% of NVQ Beauty Therapy qualifications in London and the provider nationally of the Diploma in Retail Beauty Consultancy, developed by LCBT with key employers in the industry. LCBT is open all year, operates without term breaks and offers monthly enrolment for classroom based delivery meeting the needs of learners and employers, by open access to learning throughout the year and offering opportunity to employers to qualified therapists through the in house Job Shop brokerage service. Learners are able to progress to higher levels without a break, moving into employment quickly; it is possible for Level 2 and 3 to be completed within 15 months.
The college policy of enrolment is – Careers not Courses – built around our distinctive pre-enrolment policy designed to establish learners’ needs, aims and aspirations to work in the industry and place them on the appropriate course which directly contributes to the outstanding success and progression on to further education and employment. The LCBT Job Shop monitors learner progression into further education and employment and reports positive progression rates of 92%. The Job Shop consistently advertises an average 500 jobs on behalf of the wide range of employers with whom LCBT engages.
LCBT will enrol approximately 1300 learners this year for Beauty Therapy NVQ and qualifications. Enrolment numbers increase year on year and yet demand from learners and employers still heavily outweighs the places available. LCBT’s Central London location and world renowned reputation for quality attracts learners from 44 Local Authorities in London and the South East.
Specialist short course delivery is focused on industry needs and paid for directly by the learner or employer. This provision is planned to increase significantly with the recent addition of extra building capacity.
Work Based Learning provision has seen significant expansion over the past two years with further expansion planned for the forthcoming years.
National delivery of the Retail Beauty qualification at Level 2 delivered entirely within the workplace has been taken up by over 40 major companies. Approximately 1200 retail consultants undertook the qualification in 2010/11. Companies have reported positive impact/increased business and a number of other major companies are looking to either pilot or roll this out to sales counter staff nationally. The introduction of the Level 3 qualification provides further progression opportunities for staff working within this priority sector. The number of candidates undertaking a retail qualification nationally is expected to double in the next few years.
The success of the Retail Beauty qualification led to the appointment of LCBT as lead for the West End Skill Shop (WESS). Flagship of the National Skills Academy for Retail, national network of Skill Shops. WESS launched in early 2011 as the one-stop-shop for retailers and clients looking to secure employment within the retail sector.
LCBT are also the lead for Retail, beauty and general, at the new Westfield site in Stratford. Significant delivery is due to be rolled out shortly. Seetec are leading the Skills Academy at Stratford, delivering pre-employment training, with LCBT as lead partner for Apprenticeship delivery.
LCBT will continue to work with schools in the delivery of the Hair and Beauty Diploma for 14-16 year olds. Further opportunities for engaging with this age group will be key.
Other opportunities for expansion include the care sector, distance learning and the overseas market.

Employers in the Beauty Therapy market are defined as 90% micro and small businesses are supported through the LCBT Business Support Unit and SME Clinics, offering skills analysis, training workshops, and jobs brokerage through the in-house recruitment service. Approximately 90% of learners progress to further education or employment.
The Beauty Retail sector provision is funded through Work Based Learning and Train to Gain national delivery of the BTEC Retail Beauty Consultant Diploma, developed by LCBT with key employers. To date, over 40 national employers have contracted for delivery of the training nationally. It is envisaged that, funding permitted, this will grow exponentially both within the national and international markets as opportunities to work with the British Council are anticipated. Further developments for the curriculum include development of level three and level four qualifications.
Major planned areas of expansion from 2009 included the Beauty Retail & Therapy Delivery and 16-18 offer of Hair & Beauty Schools Diploma.
The Role:
This is a role within LCBT’s Teaching and Learning Department. Duties are shared within the team and the department is responsible for fulfilling enrolment targets to contract. The department also provides information, advice and guidance to applicants and learners on programme and works closely with all other LCBT departments.
LCBT maintains high standards of customer service across all areas and we aim to provide our learners with a superb experience during their time at LCBT. Working within Teaching and Learning you will be dealing directly with learners, visitors and staff on a daily basis. It is a key requirement of this role that all communication is dealt with effectively, efficiently and in a friendly and professional manner at all times.
LCBT has a unique delivery methodology which is designed to offer access to vocational education on times and days which meet individual needs. For this reason, we have courses starting and finishing each month across a range of delivery patterns i.e. weekdays, evenings and weekends.
Amongst your duties you will be responsible for providing information across a range of areas in a range of formats including group presentations, one to one, telephone, email and written correspondence, it is therefore imperative that you maintain an in depth knowledge of all of the services on offer so that the information is relevant and accurate. You will also be responsible for all matters relating to the provision of additional learning support and key skills for life.
All aspects of LCBT service delivery is subject to ongoing evaluation and improvement through a range of methods including feedback from learners, clients, visitors and staff. You will be expected to work towards the continuous improvement of all feedback and results of the service delivery in this area.
Key to the success of this position is the desire to help individuals achieve their learning and personal aspirations. You will be responsible for individual assessment and educational offering to applicants and key performance indicators are the retention, achievement and success figures achieved by LCBT.
Most learners on programme receive all or at least some of the funding for their course through the Learning and Skills Council and a range of other funding bodies. As a team member, you will be required to maintain systems and assist with any audit requirements and/or preparation of audits and inspections, internally and externally.
As a Functional Skills Tutor, you will take more involvement and responsibility for certain aspects of the department including audit and reports to your line manager.
Key responsibilities
Functional Skills Delivery
- Deliver appropriate Initial and Diagnostic Assessments to individuals and groups, providing guidance to tutors and students regarding the analysis of the assessment outcomes
- Devise, deliver and manage programmes of study to meet learners’ individual needs and the national functional skills standards from Entry Level to Level 2
- Ensure Schemes of Work, lesson plans and group files are maintained and up to data
- Track, monitor and report on student progress, and liaise with Functional Skills Programme Coordinator and others as appropriate.
- Monitor retention, success and achievement of your cohort of learners and that they meet their aims, as identified on their diagnostic and enrolment level
- Ensure delivery of Functional Skills is in line with college aims and targets, meeting a minimum of Grad 2, ‘Good’ in line with Ofsted
- Develop a range of appropriate learning materials for use across the curriculum, participate in Functional Skills curriculum development and staff training
- Maintain quality systems within the functional skills department
- Complete relevant tracking, reporting, registration documentation as required by the College, Awarding bodies and other external agencies/customers.
- Follow and maintain internal quality assurance procedures for qualifications in this programme area, including delivery and marking of tests and assignments
- Participate in Internal Verification, Standards Moderation of work and all assessment and marking relevant to the Functional Skills Award.
- Assist in the moderation and external verification of qualifications in this subject area and liaise with the external verifier and moderator as necessary.
- Provide support to learners in a range of situations/locations as per their specific needs, 1:1 in-class, group work, etc.
- Promote a stimulating learning environment and use a range of teaching and learning strategies and materials, including the use of ILT resources, to encourage development of learners’ skills and understanding.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of inclusive learning, including cultural diversity
- Ensure that the department complies with the college’s equal opportunities, confidentiality and health & safety policies and external legislation in these areas
- Liaise with key staff and external bodies as necessary to support the programme and maintain a thorough knowledge of new developments in this area
